Unless he's foolishly confessed to helping her commit suicide, it seems
decidely premature to be charging him, or anyone, when they don't know
how she died.
Even people with degenerative spinal disorders sometimes die of strokes,
or heart attacks, particularly if they are 78 years old.

It might be getting harder to off oneself these days. Even
the catalytic converters in modern cars suck all the carbon
monoxide out of the exhaust gases. Town gas is hydrocarbon
based too, with no CO.

But it is unlawful to assist a person to commit suicide. That should not be
a great problem, for anyone properly advised about the law. But it usually
means that the person assisting should not have any discussions with the
authorities.

It's important to ensure that there are no records of assistance, such
as purchases of equipment - or balloon (now correctly spelt) gas.
But I agree about talking to the cops. Providing information just
encourages them.

I mentioned once before how a friend of an acquaintance of
mine did it with a helium cylinder. Dying painfully from
advanced prostate cancer he chose to save himself and his
family from any more pain and suffering and opted for the
bag method. One evening his wife went to have her usual
evening shower and when she returned the man was dead with a
sign around his neck saying 'do not resuscitate. Perhaps
helium has narcotic properties. Cyclopropane might be
better because it is used in anaesthesia.

Helium, in the form of balloon gas, is just a convenient way of
displacing air that contains Oxygen. Nitrogen would do just as well, but
is not so readily obtainable. Also, since Helium is lighter than air, it
is less likely to remain around afterwards to endanger others.
The body doesn't have a mechanism for detecing Oxygen deprivation, so
the user just passes out and dies.
