I thought it was a no brainer. Vinyl won. :-)
Mark
Yeah that would be a "no brain(er)" alright. But won what? :-)
Trevor.
The better format war of course. :-)
Mark
Better than minidisk at least, but that's hardly saying much :-)
Trevor.
Upgrade it to 128k MP3, mate.

It takes only a nutcase (or two) to totally disrupt
a good Usenet group. This group had two, Phil
and Arny. Between them they managed to get rid
of the nucleus of very interesting a very well-unformed
posters from this group.
Closed, moderated groups, to which the two
gentleman mentioned above have no access,
seem to be the choice now of most subscribers.

** CDs could be made from Vinyl - that ought to please everyone....
> Or did Phil just finally drive everyone away.
** I simply gave up arguing with all the audiophools and psycho trolls and
went away.
Then the NG simply collapsed.
Would seem the audiophools and psycho trolls were just not interested in
each other's opinions.
Pretty funny really.
..... Phil
I wasn't silly enough to ever buy one! :-)
Trevor.
Kill files worked well enough for me, I've never seen much point in the
closed moderated/censored groups. The problem with any newsgroup is not how
many idiots there are to be ignored, but whether there is enough intelligent
conversation to even make it worth looking.
Trevor.
Not at all. Polycarbonate is tougher :-)

Actually there seem to be a few still here after all.

True, but you can only argue the same couple of themes for so long before
getting REALLY bored. And when the argument usually degenerates to personal
abuse, it takes even less time for most of us.
Trevor.
**This group has had far more than two nutcases. In fact, at least of the
fruitcakes who stalked me on this and other groups has been thrown off the
moderated site I referred to earlier, for his disgusting and continuous
stream of insults and constant sniping. Arny certainly has problems
reconciling his religious beliefs with science. It must cause extreme angst
for him. I guess he'll keep praying to the great monster in the sky who
performs magic tricks. It keeps him happy. Those of us who have thrown off
the yoke of childhood are well aware of the delusion that grips him. Phil is
a potty mouth and extremely rude, but probably not a nutcase (perhaps
Tourette's?). There were far worse characters in this group, IMO. They
managed to contribute nothing but sniping and filth at every opportunity. It
could be argued that Phil and Arny were able to supply relevant, useful
information at times.
Between them they managed to get rid
> of the nucleus of very interesting a very well-unformed

**No, they did not. It was the result of a whole bunch of noisemakers.

**Arny regularly posts to at least one moderated group that I am aware of.
As do I. Neither of us has been thrown off.

** It's a TV show you recommended once...
**Like I said: I'm a little slow today. BBT?
FWIW: Dexter, 30 Rock, Laid, Big Love, Big Bang Theory (BBT!) are my faves
right now.
Yes, still a fan of BBT. Chuck Lorre has a deft touch. Kaley Cuoco is so
easy on the eye, but Jim Parsons is one of the finest comics I've seen on
the box. Are you a fan?

** Bit of an addict really.
Never thought I would ever see a TV sit-com all about autistic / Asperger's
people.
Except for Penny, of course.
Jim Parsons is playing himself - you know.
So is Kaley.

I got one, its ok for rehearsing at home but stuffed if I'd sit and
listen to it. Yuk.

They prevent people (like Phil and Arny) writing
a post with the header "XXX Is A Dyslectic F*ckwit"
which can easily be found, even years after the event,
by a client, or even prospective employer who
happens to type your name into a search engine.
I shared your view about closed groups, until I
was invited to join one.

With the best resolution in the world from
the other subscribers, it only takes a couple
of halfwits to disrupt a group totally. This one,
sadly in a prime example. There was a time,
not too long ago when discussion was lively,
informative with just a dash of humour.
Iain

** Fair comment in all cases.

** Good.
Employers need to know if someone is a " dyslexic fuckwit ".
The proof or disproof will be in the posts made by said fuckwit.
>> The problem with any newsgroup is not how many idiots there are to be

** Yes it is.
Criminal idiots like you in particular.

** The only comforting thought one can have about congenital morons and
public menaces like Churches - is that some right minded citizen might
take it into their head to do him in.
.... Phil
I rest my case:-)

Right, Phil proved to me a LONG time ago why it is not a good idea to use
your real name in newsgroups, and frankly I think that applies to forums,
Twitter and everything else you have no control over. I can't remember Arny
ever using such foul language however, except maybe in reply to same, as I
did a few times before realising there is absolutely no point in arguing
with foul mouthed lunatics whose only fun in life seems to be in dragging
others down to their level.

I must have missed that period, I only joined for the first time about 15
years ago. :-)
Trevor.
Most closed groups (academic and pro) insist on
real names and valid e-mail addresses. Bona fide
people have nothing to fear on such groups, and
belligerent halfwits are kept out by careful screening.
I may be old-fashioned, but I find it difficult to
take seriously people who need to cower behind
anonymity.
Iain
That's the theory which doesn't always work in practice, depending on who's
in charge.
> I may be old-fashioned, but I find it difficult to

I would have thought anyone with experience of Phil's stalking would
understand the need to protect yourself. But each to their own.
Trevor.

**I am unaware of any physical attacks from Phil on anyone in this group (or
any other group, for that matter). For my part, when the person I am arguing
with begins to respond by using banal insults I (try to) walk away.
