Berri juice factory to close

NATIONAL will stop juice production at its Riverland site in South Australia by
June next year, with the loss of 64 jobs.
The company said the decision to close the Berri factory followed a review of
all its juice manufacturing sites. The Riverland site was found to be not viable
in the long term although the company said it would continue to source fruit
from the region.
"When we take into consideration the excess manufacturing capability we have on
the eastern seaboard, where the majority of the market is located, and the
declining fruit volume in the Riverland area, the review identified that this
site is not viable in the long term," National Foods national operations manager
Tony Owen said.
"Any decision that results in job losses is taken extremely seriously.
"Today's announcement is about helping to ensure our juice products remain
affordable for our consumers today and in the future."
Mr Owen said the decision to close the Berri plant was no way a reflection on
the staff or senior management in the Riverland. It also followed a decision in
September this year to discontinue production of long-life juice at Berri after
manufacturing equipment was damaged during an August break-in.
Mr Owen said the company would support workers affected by the shutdown.
"Everyone whose job is impacted will receive their full entitlements and be
fully supported," he said. "National Foods will consider redeployment
opportunities along with relocation assistance where appropriate.
"We are also providing external outplacement support and confidential
counselling for our people."
National Foods is one of Australia's largest food and beverage groups, with core
activities in milk, dairy foods, juice, soy beverages and specialty cheese.
