THE Federal Government has said climate data showing last year was
Australia's second-hottest on record means the Senate should pass the
emissions trading scheme next month.
The Bureau of Meteorology annual statement said temperatures were
quickly rising above the long-term average at a level ''consistent
with global warming''.
In line with most other world regions, Australia had its hottest
decade since modern record-keeping began.
The Opposition said it was cynical to link the data to the emissions
trading legislation, and said if emissions needed to be cut then
''direct action'', such as changing soil composition to absorb more
carbon, would suffice.
But the Government claimed science was on its side.
"It's up to the Senate and Mr Abbott to recognise that climate change
is real, to recognise that for Australians warming is happening," the
Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, said yesterday.
The report was consistent with the "unequivocal science view" that
global warming was happening as a consequence of human activities,
"and it's in our economic and environmental interest to arrest it", he
said.
"The Australian public expect decent climate change policy from the
Leader of the Opposition. At the moment all they're getting is
mistakes and thought bubbles."
Mr Garrett called on Tony Abbott to produce figures that showed global
warming had stopped or admit he was wrong on climate change.
It was a reference to a statement by Mr Abbott last month that global
warming had stopped some years ago, even as carbon emissions continued
to rise.
The day after Mr Abbott's comment, the World Meteorological
Organisation published annual figures showing warming had continued as
expected.
Yesterday the Opposition Leader said the weather bureau was the
recognised centre of expertise on climate measurement, but that did
not mean the Government's emissions trading legislation - which he
again called a ''great, big new tax'' - was the best way to tackle
climate change.

temperatures, and significantly warmer than the 1990s, the 1980s or

Carbon dioxide is being pumped out at ever increasing rates, primarily
from burning fossil fuels, and it's being pumped out faster then the
natural environment can absorb it, which is currently around 55%. The
other 45% is adding to the greenhouse gasses that trap heat radiation
coming off the earths surface and reradiates it back down, thus
warming the planet.

Without an atmosphere it would get hotter than
that in daytime, and colder at night.
But with an N2 and O2 atmosphere, it would be
different, even without GHGs.

The AGW creeps want everybody to live like that,
instead of burning natural gas, they would have me
wearing fur clothing, only the anti-fur creeps would
not allow it.
GreenHouses do not have much CO2 in them,
in fact not enough to satisfy the plants, so the owners
burn natural gas or propane in unvented stoves, that
both warms the GreenHouse and emits water and CO2,
and the plants love it.
Plants love CO2, and I do, I can't stand diet cola
without the CO2.
The sun warms the atmosphere and the surface
of Earth, and GHGs, mostly water vapor, cool the
atmosphere, less than 20 percent of the heat from
the sun is radiated to space by the surface, more
than 80 percent is radiated to space by water vapor
and a fraction of that is radiated to space by CO2.
AGW nuts will just have to get used to the idea
that GHGs cool the atmosphere because nobody can
name anything else that radiates the atmosphere's
heat to space.
