Two centuries ago, on the ruins of Bastille, the political and cultural
system on which Europe stood from time collapsed. From England, chimneys and
locomotives started throwing smoke signals of a new era. The glance began to
spread out: from traditional capitals of art, deep seated in the heart of
Europe or outstretched toward the Mediterranean sea, the geographical
boundaries expanded to Scandinavian countries, the huge Russia and the
contradictory America. Still in the changing of latitudes, historical
situations and languages, painting of 19th and 20th centuries was a choral
research for the essence, the deepest, the most direct and courageous
impression of world that art has dared proposing. That was the reaction of a
"modern feeling" to the very important themes of world and man...and the
expression of that reaction are the Images of feeling.
