XP and firewire at startup

I have a PC that was running W2K and two firewire drive that would come
on with the PC when it was turned on.
on with the PC when it was turned on.
All worked fine, but I have since upgraded to XP and now when the PC
comes on and XP loads the firewire drives are not present. I need to
power them off and back on for XP to recognise them.
Does anyone have any clues as to why this is the case and how to fix it
