Does anyone recommend a program, (doesn't have to be free, but that
would be good) that will burn a DVD from AVI file/s? No need for any
bells and whistles, but it would need to create functional menus. I
have Nero and Roxio, but my grandson needs something without the
baggage of these apps for his overstretched Vista laptop.

Roxio does do that job pretty well even on an overstretched Vista laptop.

I like http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.php
Very simple and allows use of different encoders depending on the required
final quality.

I was using this but could not figure how to get things in order on the disk
when it burnt the DVD. I had them lined up & it would change the order.

I use ConvertXDVD. I also use Nero Burning ROM on occasions, but CXVDVD does the
job without any fuss. With Nero you use Vision Express and a wizard steps you
through the process of using wallpaper, ordering of titles and so on.

A whole forum thread over at Whirlpool on this topic. Every piece of
DVD/video software ever released is probably mentioned.

VSO ConvertXtoDVD & CopyToDVD run in combo do
the job with one intermediate click between converting & copying.
Place blank DVD in slot before starting the conversion......
The lead-in menu works well too.
