I ask as it seems to be horribly slow at the moment. And I'm not sure why it
should be so.
I only have one plugin - Net Usage Item, a bar graph that shows how much data
I've used from my monthly allowance.
It depends on what its doing, how many tabs open, etc. Mine uses 27MB on start
up without visiting any pages.

Flash seems to such up a lot of memory/performance. I use a blocker for that.

I run one of those separately in my Vista sidebar.

the longer it Run, the more Tabs you have....
I can easily get mine up 250Meg
It's got a Low Memory Flag in the hidden settings, doesn't work,
unless you consider 10meg a lot.
Mine was also running slow.
I googled and read an article where the addon "Vacuum Places Improved"
supposedly cleans up things and speeds it up.
I installed it and yes, it seems to have helped a lot.
Try that.
Task manager shows mine uses 60 MB at load (latest update).

Here is a web page that tells you how to fix the memory leak in FF.
<
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/fix-for-firefox-memory-leak-on-windows/ >
The thing to remember with FF is that it regularly saves a copy of your
current open tabs so that if something happens and you need to close t FF ,
then you will still have your last tabs showing when you restart FF.
This new setting will fix the memory leak , but when you minimise FF and
bring it out of hibernation , it may take a bit longer than to open if you
did not use this new setting.

That addresses "trim_on_minimise" but doesn't do anything about
progressive bloat_while_maximised.
None of those tweaks for memory usage do anything, it caches everything
in memory even if you tell it to use disk only.
Memory usage, is like taxes, always goes up and never goes down.
Yeah, my Firefox is currently showing a working set of 139 MB, but who
cares when you've got 4 GB RAM?

Long-time resident of Adelaide, South Australia,
which may or may not influence my opinions.
So you must be on 64bit OS then?
OK 3.5 GB usable, or whatever it is on 32-bit Windows 7. I did run
64-bit Win 7 for a while, but went back to 32-bit, as I couldn't see any
real advantage.
We just set up two 64x W7 systems with the basic stuff on, which seem to
run OK, haven't checked for feedback if it's suitable to run all
programmes yet or if there has been an improvement in RAM usage.
Photoshop CS4 is the only 64x in their Master Collection but you can
still use 86x within, next step is to activate the 64x side and see how
that performs.
Yep - Not a great deal around using 64x to its full potential.

How long have been bang'n that drum. It's good to see others
finally get the point.
There is probably less than 1% of the population that would actually
benefit from using 64 bits.

When I checked with mine it had only the one page open.

3.5.7.
It's really slow loading pages from the herald-sun website. And if I want to
comment on a news article each letter typed takes probably 5 to 10 seconds to
appear in the editor box.
I loaded up IE 6. It has no such problems navigating the same website or with me
doing the same stuff.

OK, going off topic here as I'm interested in Win7 and a new computer. Why did
you go back to 32b? If there was no obvious advantage, was there any obvious
disadvantages? Otherwise, why not stay with 64b?

I'll give that a try.
I also cleared the cache, deleted all cookies and browsing history, quit out of
FF and, then rebooted the machine and tried again.
Herald-Sun website is un-navigable via Firefox. It's OK via IE but still
sluggish.
It doesn't help that the PC's old, but that said, it was fine up until a week or
so ago. It seems to have co-incided with the crap on the main page about Super
Coach footy competition.
But that doesn't explain why, when on another page if I decide to comment on an
article, that it takes about 5 secs between entering a character into the editor
before it appears.
I ended up typing my comments into Notepad then copy/paste them into the
Reader's Comments editor and submitting it that way.
If I view H-S from one of the other PCs on the network, FF is fine.
Solution seems to be centred on getting a new computer...
As for myself there are not many programmes that use 64 bit and only one
that I would like to use is Photoshop to extend the memory. From the
Adobe Master collection most programmes within are 32 bit. Haven't tried
Premiere but that's another to use the more menory option.
r
Good question, but it's so long ago I'm not really sure. I think I
remember reading somewhere that 64b may actually run slower because the
32-bit apps run in some sort of emulation mode. And the programs use
more memory.

Hmm.
My wife's AV PC shit itself a while ago. She currently has mine, an aging P4 3
gig job. I'm running an old IBM Netvista.
Anyway, she needs a new PC. She runs programs such as Premiere, Cool Edit Pro,
now called Audition.
We need to do some research with these programs, but if they run 64b versions, I
wonder if going W7 64b and installing as much RAM as the new PC, probably
something E8500 based or maye i7, depending which is gruntier would be more
beneficial than sticking with either XP Pro or running Win7 32b.
Have a look at a GB intel chipset MB P55A - UD3 ($150) with a i5-750
CPU ($230) DDR3 ram 2000 4Gb kit ($170)will run 64bit better than the
old Q9400 quad processor.
the i7-860 $330 i7-870 $648 these have hyperthreading.
This will be my next basic build, I think Socket 775 has finished as all
the MB's are drying up, still old stock available. The E8500 has
finished only old stock available.

Just checked out of interest and Adobe Premiere CS4 is x64 programme.
64-bit optimization improves workflow up to 227%
Gain up to 227% performance improvement when you use Adobe Premiere Pro
CS4 on a 64-bit system with more memory.

Thanks Rob. Looks promising.
$550, plus say, $100 for a reasonable video card, plus say, $200 for a decent
case with quite cooling, it may add up to be a decent A-V processing computer.
