Hey group,

I want to have a software database that corresponds to my files,
including titles, authors, keywords, etc.
For example, if I wanted to file an article on Linux by John Smith I
would want two fields

Title Keywords
Linux John Smith, linux, computers, operating systems, software

What's the easiest way for me to implement this? I tried looking
Access but the 'one value per field' rule would mean I would have to
link one table to another, making the entry process to slow.
I can do it in excel, and do a text search filter on fields, but this
limits me to two AND/OR/NOT(etc) conditions.

Anyone know of something similar to, but better (i.e. more search
customization) than the excel implementation mentioned above?

Cheers

Sounds like you want a Desktop Indexer

Google Desktop, Yahoo Desktop, M$ Search 4, Copernic Desktop Search

You really really really would want to have a need for these:
All of these needs shit loads of Disk Space,Memory and CPU Cycles.
If I really had to choose, it would be Copernics

I am not sure what the problem is with using Access. You are able to
set up a number of fields which you use for keywords - no more problem
entering keywords into different fields by using tab to go to the next
field than entering a comma after each word

Then set up a query using a formulae such as ...

if fieldA or if fieldB or if fieldC etc = fieldSearch (the field you use
for searching) then....

However, before giving up perhaps drop into one of the Access newsgroups
and post a request for help, describing what you want to do. There are
lots of very helpful people on those groups who could give you the right
formulea for the search.

Alternatively, have a look on the net (google) for applications designed
for what you want - book cataloging - and you might find one that suits
you - I would be surprisedif you didn't find a number.

David,

It seems your answer would satisfy my needs pretty well. I was just
without the knowledge of a relevant formula. I'll drop in on an access
forum as you suggested. Cheers also son of a bitch, if it wasn't for
the CPU/memory usage levels Copernics would be perfect. Unfortunately,
I'm using an oldish laptop.

Access.

Nope, doesnt affect the speed.

And is much too crude in other areas too.

Dastex,

I love using FileMaker Pro. I only have one of the earlier versions, which
are great. You can add as many fields as you like. You create the template
from scratch so you make it to suit your needs.

Add or remove any fields till you are comfortable with it.

Here is a link to an early version 5 - free download. See what you think.
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/File_Maintenance_and_Repair_Utilities/FileMaker_Pro.html

It is up to Version 10 now, but an earlier version as above might be enough
for you. There are also in between version. Just do a Google. There are also
tutorials and support.

I am not affiliated with this product just enjoy using it.

Best wishes
Katherine
