Hi,

Is there a way to hook up an external monitor to an iBook?

I did a search for this same thing but only found posts from 2002,
thought things might have changed since then.

Thanks
Steve

There are many different models of iBook. The later models (white)
models do allow the connection of an external monitor, but they mirror
the LCD screen. I am not sure if there is an earlier model that can do
it too.

Yes but you will just get a mirror image of the internal display, assuming
you have a white iBook. There are firmware hacks on the net to get separate
images, have a poke around.

Mirroring the LCD screen is exactly what the guy wants that I'm asking
this question for. He doesn't want to go and buy a whole new computer
just so he can use a larger screen.

I'm not sure if he has a white ibook or not.

Is there a certain monitor you have to buy, any special cords, etc. to
do this? Or (if he has the right iBook) is it just as simple as plugging
a cord from the iBook to the new monitor?

Thanks

What do you mean by larger screen? There will be the same number of
pixels as on the LCD screen, showing exactly the same thing.

There are adaptor cables for the iBook to get a VGA connector. You may
find them on the Apple Store. However it is important to find out which
model iBook he has. If he has the manual that came with it, it should
tell him about connecting an external monitor.

...unless you enable spanning.

I have my 1024x768 iBook LCD then span onto a 1280x1024 LCD above it.

All the white iBooks came with the mini-VGA to HD15 VGA convertor in the
box. It's quite likely the owner has the right thing at home somewhere.

The mini-VGA to RCA/s-video convertor costs $45 for the current G4 and
the 2nd rev G3. And you can't get DVI for the iBooks as a selling point
to upgrade to a pbook.

I just bought a ibook g4 on ebay and I wanted to connect a ibook(mini dvi)to a planar monitor(vga)and bought a mini dvi to vga adapter on amazon and all you do
is connect the ibook to the adapter, the adapter to the monitior cord and, the monitor cord to the monitor. hit may mirror the lcd screen but that's what i want it to do!!! i'm happy!!! i got a cheap laptop and it works with everything working!!!
