Make sure it hasn't started up as a 'tray icon'.

No?

Sure?

Ok.

Run qbittorrent in a terminal and google any error messages it produces.
A successful run looks like this:

yowie@thepub:~$ qbittorrent
Peer ID: -qB1234-
HTTP user agent is qBittorrent v2.8.4
yowie@thepub:~$

You can post any error messages here, but *first* check for similar
issues reported on the QBT forum:

If you launch it from the terminal, what are the error messages ?

Googling for
"Qbittorrent" "Pixmap is not an X11 class pixmap"
gets a bug report for qbittorrent
https://bugs.launchpad.net/qbittorrent/+bug/883766

doesn't seem to be a solution for it though.

googling for
"qbittorrent: symbol lookup error: qbittorrent: undefined symbol"

gets a bunch more bug reports
https://bugs.launchpad.net/qbittorrent/+bug/799330 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/qbittorrent/+bug/878036
suggest the problem is different versions of libraries it uses from
enabling more than one reposoitory.

http://qbforums.shiki.hu/index.php?topic=344.0 also implies it's a
version mismatch and suggests trying to start it not minimised (with
how to do that.)

So I'd start with the minimise fix and see if it works. If not then
try that google search along with your Ubunto version in another set
of quotes and see what you can find.

Thanks, but being dumb, how do I do a "minimise fix"?

I don't know if this will be of any use to you, but sometimes it helps
me. Try starting the program from the command line, instead of from the
GUI. Doing that, you may get some error messages that don't show up when
you launch from the GUI.

Thanks, have posted these errors, but being technically inept, no idea how
to fix!

So read that page and try what it says.

Update issued by developer, now 2.9.3, solved all these issues.
