I agree totaly. I was reading this writeup on the Lancer MR. They said that
the Lancer MR was no good because it only came with 13inch wheels.
- They made no mention of the fact that it has a weak SOHC 8V engine while
the cheap proton M21 which is based on the previous generation Lancer
comes with a strong 100+kw DOHC unit.

Its pretty obvious where their priorites lie.

I occasionaly buy zoom but even zoom has gone downhill since julian left.
A good example of this is their heavy concentration on supercharing
Excels?!?!

In thoes days mags would feature stories about people who have doneup and
modified performance cars to make them more enjoyable to own and drive.
Like you say people would buy a cordia and make it perform like a newer or
more expensive performance car.

Now its some kind of warped fashion game to try and make the most outrageous
and undriveable car possible. Wheels are so big so as to make the car scrape
if
corners are taken at greater than 30kph. Brand new expensive performance
cars
are turned into undriveable abstract "art" peices that are moved arround
from show
to show on flat bed trucks. People spend a fortune turning brand new
expensive
FWD shopping trolleys are turned into some kind of drag racing machine's
even
though the FWD layout makes them totaly unsuitable so they end up being
thrashed
by V8 cortina's and torana's done by people in their backyard on a
shoestring budget.

And as you say the cars are always drooped with anorexic women barely
clothed
who know nothing at all about the actual cars. While looking at women is by
no
means a chore ;-) they are usualy used as a substitute for actual content.
Kinda
like a diversion for a substandard product. In a way its also sexist as it
assumes
the reader will be a male however im sure there must be some women who like
cars??? Oh and theres always the old "you only buy this to look at the women
- arnt I good enough for you?" chant from the
girlfreind/wife/defcato/whatever.

These days I find Autospeed a good read and its quite cheap however you cant
take
it to the loo in which case its usualy a zoom or an old FF&R/H4's or
something.
Another familiy member subscribes to wheels which is not a bad read either.
Motor can be good as it tends to be more performance oriantated however it
is also a little thin on content. Which car can be interesting. Then there
are some
of the oversears mags which can be good with juicy E30 M3's and Sierra
Cosworths.
Julian's new book which he has been spamming everyone about is actulay a
good
read too. It is high quality hard cover with plenty of pictures and
no-nonsesne
in depth plain english info. Of course he wants $60 for it....

Of course I would still like to see a good fours and sixes (with the
occasional
EFI V8 or V12) performance mag with a good range of street driven 80's and
90's
performance cars. Eveything from GTi swifts to Twin turbo Supra's but with
more
of an emphasis on genuine performance cars built up on a budget with imput
from
the owner rather than a new WRX that has been turned over to "Rip off
Performance tuning"
with an open checkbook.

FF&R's circulation has never been higher, growing over a period where most
paper magazine circulations have been getting smaller. Interesting that you
can never find anyone with praise of the mag, though - perhaps their current
readers can't write?

I recommend AutoSpeed myself - 7 magazine articles a week, delivered fresh
to your PC screen. Includes all types of feature cars, very strong tech, new
car reviews, etc. Over 500 back issue articles available. Annual
subscription - 30 bucks.

Julian I once went to school with some one who thought FF&R was like a
bible. Picking up a copy and reading it from cover to cover. On a number
of occasions the guy would show me a pick and say something like " look
how his done that car up " it was like a Lexus with 17", I dont exactly
classify that as done up. Once I read though a bit of the magazine and
noticed the Howler(sp?) project anyway what a load of shit that was, and
who ever won it is trying to sell if for 45k$s in Unique cars. I think
the reading demographic is manly P-Platers who buy Excels and whack all
the plastic shit and think its a rocket.

I would suggest also a magazine called High Performance Imports, comes
out once every 3 months and is a Magazine specializing in grey imports.

Yeah and I can imagine that it's a bit oppressive for girls who are
interested in cars. Think if it was the other way round.
I mean I definitely would have trouble enjoying a magazine with
pictures of cars with some he-man is flopping his log over the airbox

Yeah, not bad esp. considering what mags cost these days.
I think it's suffering a bit from Manufacturers not taking
Online magazines that seriously so having trouble getting
interesting cars. But it's good to have a performance biased
reviewer testing ordinary cars.

As with all magazines some issues are good and some are bad
but at least if you don't like the current articles you
can just search through the old ones you haven't read.

Works well on IE5 & Netscape 6
Netscape 4.X doesn't like the Java in the pages

Yep..I used to read FF&R a few years ago when it was good - I finally got
the shits with them over their SS vs XR8 vs WRX comparo and the fact that
many of their cars were just plain ricey, so I switched to Hot4s, which at
the time was better - lately though that too seem to be going downhill.

I find it really annoying that all the "four" magazines are now focusing on
the big stupid bodykit with no grunt end of the market, as well as the "blow
$50k on a $20k car" market. As most around here will know, I own an RB
Gemini. I am under no illusion that this is any sort of performance car,
but I do believe in making the most of what I have without spending triple
it's market value on it. Yet there isn't a publication out there that
provides some decent ideas that won't break the bank - just simple
performance upgrades and that sort of thing for people like me who aren't
into bodykits. I picked up a Commodore magazine not too long ago (can't
remember which) and it was good to see that the cars in there didn't have
wild bodykits and the money was spent in useful places on the cars. It
would be nice if there was something like this for fours.

Just on a bit of a tangent:

I lowered my swift by just replacing the springs with Hot Bits ones and
although it handles better it rides like shit. But everywhere I've been has
told me not to replace the shocks.

Zoom is pretty good, lots of technical articles. The Excel Files currently
going on is pretty funny, good on em for taking a nasty car and having some
fun with it. I guess im a bit biased tho because a lot of the articles have
input from Turbo Tune in Adelaide, and i take my Celica there for dyno tunes
(they do a bloody good job too!). It's always interesting to see what those
guys are getting up to!.
(i wont mention the time i took another Celica in for a tune and came out
$790 poorer tho! - but the work done was of high standard)

The mainstream mags worked that out years ago, and stopped doing it (Wheels
et al). Seeing women used as decorative meat is a total turn-off for women.
it essentially says "go away, this isn't for you, it's Boy's Stuff".
Thanks, back on the mag rack with that one.

There was an Australian magazine just like this a while back - I can't quite
remember the name, but it was something like road & track... I used to buy
it, it was really good. In the end, another magazine broke into his office
and wrecked all his computers etc. He also complained of the heavy handed
way the car manufactures used to treat him if he didn't do a good write up..
Anyone else remember this?

Well Glenn, I'm afraid I'll have to agree with you on that one.
I Used to be a huge fan of FF & R but lately the mag has gone down hill in
my opinion.
1997-98 was diffenately to "boom" years for them with excellent articles on
Tech and car reviews, car which ordinary people could afford, not some '98
50,000 WRX that has had a 20,000 dollar makeover by some soft cock owner
with an open cheque book and some cheap blonde model , in a "loin cloth",
:-), draped over the bonnet!!!!!!

HEY we're in the real world here!!!!!!!!!!!! Who reading this can offord
that sort of expense????????????
Zoom, on the other hand, has gained my readership because of its excellent
informative tech articles on real cars drivin by real people in a real
world. Keep it up Zoom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes John, it was indeed Australian Road & Track, i've still got a few
issues floating around somewhere, I seem to remember it being slightly
more 'amateurish in presentation etc compared to Wheels/Motor, but
that didn't worry me as the articles where quite good.

They did a big chip comparo in one issue using all sorts of cars
including VL's - i've never seen a chip comparo in any other Aus mags
like it - I wonder why ;-)

The jurnos from it must be around somewhere, maybe Julian or Martin
knows where they went?

OOOOh a programmer! fuck your life must be satisfying. I'll bet you're a trekkie
too, you badly-dressed closet-homo felcher.
You said it yourself that the java is shifty on autospeed so whats the fucken
deal, the prob is at THAT end as far as Im concerned because my browser has no
probs anywhere else. And fuck microsoft IE, too...its just a matter of
principles (and you're obviously a sell-out). So many ways I want to insult, so
little time, so in closing - watch what you say, stupid fuck, and keep your
shit relevant if you ever decide to attempt a contribution to my thread. Yes,
my thread.

p.s. my original comment about autospeed crashing me was a (true, but) off hand
quip in good humour - as if I'd actually give a fuck about seeing what

Any web programmer worth his salt should test their pages
on all available browsers and Operating Systems AND get
them to work bug free.

Why in hell should Julian Edgar have to write off
all Netscape users just because his web programers
are hacks. That's cutting out a lot of customers.

When I last asked about the download performance
of Autospeed the developers gave Julian the usual
"It's a problem with the user's setup" response
which frankly isn't good enough.

Though to be fair a lot of issues with applications
crashing are due to (lack of) memory issues and
annoying resident programs like virus checkers and
printer/scanner software.

We run Nutscrape 4.x at UNI, no probs with autospeed.

The main problem I get with Nutscrape 4.72 on NT & 98SE at work
is running 6 or 7 browser windows and opening links into new windows.

I like to find the stories I'm interested in and then open them
all in seperate windows. The other screens freeze up until the
Java gets going. Works better on Netscape 6

News is a text only media, your spelling formatting and choice
of words (and obviously the content of the post) are the only
thing we have to measure your intelligence. So if your posts
are all badly formatted flamebait then we can only assume that
is a good measure of you.

I feel that people who insist on using formal grade english on the 'net are

snobs, or wankers, or thats just what they do, but when they feel the need
to point it out, whoa, how impressed am I, does pointing out errors like
that make you feel like your your somehow above other people ? The most
intelligent people I know cant write structured essays etc... which im SURE
you can do.

Hot 4s used to be good, but then they had a survey and most people wanted
more late model cars. So now it is full of riced up cars.
They used to have lots of gems, datsuns, toyotas. all the older 4s.

i have an old FF&R yearbook that is really good. has wrxs, a datsun 1600,
rotaries, information on all the different aftermarket ECUs other stuff i
cant remember. now i dont even look at them in the shop.

i recommend street machine. they are starting to have lots of older cars
with EFI engines, brake upgrades and improved handling. although if i see
one more purple WB statesman ute i am going to go crazy.
street commodores is also good. although you have to really like commodores
to get through a whole issue.

actually i find Martin Donnon's articles in Zoom to be quite interesting and
well written. As for Austospeed, at least Mr Edgar has the balls to leave
his comfort zone (magazines) and try something different. And anyway, in ten

most threads on this ng end up in some sought of conflict - must be that
cars are a touchy subject.
In fact, people often see some of their self worth as having to do with what
they own. Cars have to fit in this equation somewhere

The turbos are much fun. A 3" exhaust and some boost should get the 1.8L up
to the 2L's speed. A manual GTS-t and SR20DET Silvia/180sx get very similar
straight line times (difference is 1 or 2 hundredths of a second). GTR will
cain all of their arse though :)

Apart from the factory sticker that says: "Twin Cam Intercooled Turbo".
And the round keyhole at the back.
And usually the K's thing gives it away.

No, no... you see your NA auto Silvia is only disguising itself as something
near John's 200sx. Don't kid yourself that because you have a similar

You need to pick-up B5 from the 2nd series. Badly overracted, but a very
good storyline compared to Star Trek. Star Wars episodes 2 & 3 could be
brilliant along similar lines if Lucas wanted them to be (wars between
factions, politics, ikky stuff like genetic manipulations, people being
controlled/posessed by Force powers, all sorts of battles involving
great CGI, big battles between lifelong friends, slave revolts,
taking-over of corrupt governments by even more corrupt ones, etc), but
I bet he'll make it an even fuzzier "family moment" than TPM.

Well the thing about B5 is, compared to ST, it does have a storyline. DS9
drifts in and out of a continuing story line with that Dominion thing so
it's a close contender to B5 but TNG doesn't have one unless you actually
see something out of that exploration crap. Voyager (hmmm, Seven of
Nine....imagine one thru six!) has that minimal storyline (get back to
Alpha) but unlike TNG it's got far more interesting characters!

'fraid not, Chris. As much as you'd like to think it, my car IS YOUR CAR, only
about $2000 worth of bolt-ons away. And while we're at it, its about $4000 of
bolt-ons away from pooing all over a stocky 200sx. I know it hurts, but this is
how it is. If you wanted a distinctive, fast, sporty, turbo coupe you shouldve

Liberty RS (halfway decent) to a fucken volvo! I mean....its a volvo! a volvo! do

be adding your mindless drivel and your details to their killfile.

Luser.
