Just wondering about painting bits of plastic trim; things like
headlight surrounds, highlights on grilles (and the grille itself), etc.
I need to turn a whole bunch of stuff that's currently chrome (plastic
chrome, that is) to matte-black, but it has to last ... if it was metal,
I'd just undercoat & use a few coats of paint from a can (small areas,
so the uniformity problem from cans ain't there).
However, is there any way you can do plastics like that without using a
spray gun? Or do I have to get some paint made-up with the flex agent in
it, and christen the spray gun (all that cleaning, yuk!)

I can help.
Your first task is to identify what types of plastic these components are
made from. As you say, the parts are currently plated it is most likely that
the material is Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene. Yup, common old ABS. More
often than not, it will be a high heat grade (to cope with the temperatures
involved in the plating process and those that cars have to endure).
What you have to do is dechrome the parts, that is, reverse the plating
process. Any place that peforms plastic plating can do this. By doing this
you avoid any sanding, which you defintely don't want to do.
Ok, now to coat the plain plastic parts. Get on the phone to ICI and sort
out an etch primer to key to the plastic. After a good coat of this is dry
and a light 1000, the parts are ready for the matt black.
Beautiful! And it will last a long time.
Cheers,
Adam
p.s. I am afraid you are going to have to dirty the new gun!

Shit, you've got a spray gun and don't use it Forg!!!! better go and
buy a 4wd then ;-)

Hmm, good point ... the compressor is also rather unsuited to road
driving, innit? :-)

That's the trouble with compressors, especially exhaust-driven intake air
compressors.
'Engine has a turbo' implies 'Engine designers are too lazy to do anything
else to get more power'

An unused compressor too!!1, i've just had a brain wave (no comments
thanks!!!) why not strap the thing into the boot of the 242, fabricate
an adaptor plate to the carb of your Volvo and run the hose between
the two, you could also get a tap plumed into the line on the dash to
regualte the air flow, it would be just like in Mad Max, I can see it

thank god he's out there!!

Yeah, annoying as a road vehicle at the rest of times!!! You need to travel
only down steep hills, balancing yourself on top of it like it's a big
ball-bearing ...

I'd need a damned long extension cord (aren't 3-phase cables expensive or
something?) ... and I could be wrong, but isn't 19cfm just a teensy bit low?
:-) :-)

Plug it in befor you leave for the train station, should have enough
pressure to get you there with judicious of the tap ;-)

You lost me, do you mean something to do with Steve Bisley?
Kieron
Isn't that what would make me angry enough to rampage around and attempt
revenge upon the evil wrongdoers?
[Long time since I've watched it though]

Oh yeah, gotcha now, yep, he would have to have been run over by an
amphibious 4wd while rowing a boat on Water Rats!!
Kieron
Either that, or he drowns because Colin Friels pulls that lever in the
middle of the home-made boat, it splits in half, and it sinks in an
unforeseen way ...
