Well, with all the winter sales going on right now, I'm thinking about
replacing my somewhat battered walking pack with something newer.

I'm looking for something about 70 litres that's suitable for 3+ day
bushwalking trips. Light weight & the ability to cope with
blackberries etc. are highly desirable features, though possibly
exclusive...8^)

Oh, and finding it on sale in Melbourne would be great, too.

At the moment I'm thinking about either the new Macpac Cascade 75 or
the Osprey Aether 70. The Osprey is quite a bit lighter than the
Macpac, and I know that Macpac's aren't quite what they used to be.
However, I'm not sure the Osprey is going to be tough enough for
Australian conditions.

Anyone got either of these? Or any other recommendations? If so, your
opinions would be welcome...

Regards,

- David.

Osprey are lighter, but made of lighter-weight (thinner, less durable)
materials as well. Osprey tend to be more expensive too. Try Paddy Pallin
(if you've got a credit card, you can buy on-line) at www.paddypallin.com.au

Macpac are still made to the highest quality and equal to anything from the
northern hemisphere.

FWIW, my decision process is to narrow down the choice to items that
meet my specs.

Then search the great virtual world (and discount 90% of what I read).

Then go in to the shop and pump the sales folk but most of all try the
product.

So take in two 20kg sacks of concrete mix, drop 'em in the pack and
ask if you can go walkies.

This is the most critical step of all (woah, preaching now): how the
thing feels and fits.

DAMHIKT!!
