I've searched the back pages of the West Australian newspaper several times,
and found not a mention of the Tour. I think there might have been one
picture of the Crit series last month; I suppose since it happened locally
they couldn't really ignore it completely.

I saw a mention of it on Channel 9 news the other night. I don't think any
tv station is broadcasting it though.

The Adelaide Advertiser usually has good coverage.

South Australia are getting 30 minute highlights on Channel 7 each night.

Apparently theres going to be program broadcast nationally later in the year.

IMO the coverage is pretty bad - lots of ads, lots of station promo's, I think
we're lucky to be getting 15 mins of actual cycling.

Thats still 13 minutes more than we got last year. IMO the fact that some
ppl might tune in and think that cyclists have some place on the road along
with their cars is a great bonus to all riders. Well done Channel 7!

Well all I can say is that I am glad that Sports Tonight and Toyota World
Sports on SBS gave it some coverage. Channel 7 demonstrated yet again that
if the sport doesnt involve tennis balls, gymnastics, ice skating or AFL
balls, that they do not know how to cover it. (ie theydidnt even bother in
every state except SA)

It is also worth noting that channel 10 had a two hour program last
Saturday afternoon featuring the skiled engineering summer of cycling (and
more particulalry the Bay Criterium series). I would be happy if any
station except 7 had the rights (and more particularly one of SBS, the ABC
or 10)

Not happy 7

who still holds the cross to the basketball as Jan Ullrich made the
crucial attack up the road in the Olympic road race against 7.

I had hoped that when pay television started that we would get a greater
range of sports live.
I personally write to SBS regularly to thank them for their support of
cycling. I hope one day to be able to sit up and watch the last couple of
hours of the Tour of Flanders and Roubaix.
If enough people keep on asking.......

Yep, there's a good case for having it on a commercial network. Introducing
cycling to the general public helps us all.

And the coverage was better than last year.

I wonder though if anybody _but_ cyclists would have tuned in to the telecasts
more than once. If they did, they may not tune in ever again.

A lot happened on individual stages this year (rather than being a procession).
IMO, that didnt come across in the telecast.

Here's what I'd like to see next time:

The tour down under website promoted instead of the SA lotteries web
site. The tour web site is the perfect place to inform people about
race tactics, equipment etc. I can't remember it being mentioned
once. That would make way for more actual race coverage.

Any "local colour" interviews to be held while the closing crdeits
are displayed, not eating into race coverage time.

Better editing of the footage.

And finally, a national broadcast. It seems to me that the tour still
feels a bit parochial due to the limited scope of the coverage. It
would be great if people felt it was Australia's tour, that just
happened to be held in SA because its easier to do this stuff in a
smaller centre like Adelaide.

One thing that the tour organisers did this year was encourage people to ride
to the stages. I live in the Adelaide Hills, and it was really nice to see a
whole lot of riders on the roads, in the morning. And for a change, all us
roadies waved and greeted each other - even to a tub o'lard like me :-)

It would also be nice if the entire day's unedited footage was made available
somehow, say at the Tour village. Currentlt, although the village is open to
the public, there's _not_ that much to see there.

Regards
Andrew

What are you talking about? There was no coverage, hasn't been one for 3
years (outside Adelaide). Infact it's an almost total news blackout,
noone has heard of the TDU even.

Last year, SA got 10 minutes which basically was enough to read out the results.

If you read the rest of my response you'll see I'm no fan of what we got this
year. I wasn't the guy congratulating channel 7, I was making suggestions as to
how to improve it. The coverage _was_ better than last year, the rest of the
country gets a summary program, and SA got some extra time.

Its interesting that you say that noone's even heard of TDU. On the telecasts
they said more than once how it's such a big event.

It's probably better known in Europe than the rest of Australia. It will be
interesting to see what the 90 minute highlights package is like. If you
aren't happy with the coverage you can always email Ch 7.

The TDU promoter refused SBS coverage to give Ch7 an exclusive in
Adelaide. SBS were welcome to show the race in other states but because
they are setup nationally with the single signal they weren't able to do
so.

My request would be for Ch7 to drop the coverage altogether. Ch7 did the
same thing to soccer and the NBL for a few years, ie get the rights
before other networks then give inadequate coverage. However, their
"contact us" page is buggy, doesn't seem to work on my Macintosh.
