It might be worth looking at what OpenStreetMap is offering for
the iPhone: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Iphone

bigtincan may even have a free application that does routing
from OSM data: http://www.bigtincan.com

There's certainly a good deal of cycle path data now on OSM, with
a bicycle-centric view of that data available from:
http://www.opencyclemap.org/

I have MotionX on my phone already and didn't realise they had added the
map storage function. Busily downloading maps for my area now so I can
try it out tomorrow weather permitting.

It should help extend the battery life on long rides because previously
I had to have 3G on and GPS which drained the battery in around 4 hours.
This should extend it to about double that I hope.

At $2.99 it's a LOT better value than Tomtom. Like they say you can
either ride a bike to get a tight arse or because you are one. I fall
into the latter category.

Oh, yes. The other thing with MotionX is you can grab a bike route on
bikely.com then download the map to your iPhone easy enough. I think you
have to save it in GPX format then follow the instructions in the
MotionX manual.
