I started to read about this and thinking, how will it go with Australian
Airspace policies of "see and avoid".

http://www.theage.com.au/technology/technology-news/police-may-deploy-spy-drones-20120512-1yjvp.html

But a CASA spokesman pretty well answered that.

You'd think that Victoria Police airwing people would understand this, so why
are they talking about it?

The definition seems to be getting blurry. What's the difference between a UAV, a drone and my kids model aircraft?

BTW - was cruising along the Potomac on a lovely Spring evening a few weeks ago and watching the RPT jets land at DIA airport. After we saw one jet land we heard a whoosh pass overhead. It was 90 degrees to the track of the jet, it was low and it was fast, and it was not visible. We concluded that we had been buzzed by a UAV from Quantico. I hope we didn't blink for the photo.

G'day all
Been tied up for yonks and cannot get to this NG via my other computer.

Locally there has been some major UAV testing at West Sale over several
years up to fair altitude, and also some near Geelong and over Port Phillip
bay.

Can dig out some detail if anyone interested. I think also the FAA is
moving to find some UAV agreement.

cheers
Brian

I wondered where you'd got to, Brian.

I'd be interested if you have any more information about the Australian
tests.

Cheers,

H.

G'day Harold & all

Retired from VP AOPA 2010 to catch up 20 years personal backlog. Doing some
volunteer work on tech/airspace and RAPAC for the Guild of Pilots and
Navigators. On that topic if you want an ADS-B "feel" go to
http://www.gapan.org/about-the-guild/guild-news/ page 16 - and before you
ask no, being an Aussie I don't wear livery :-)

UAV - you will find some good reading here http://www.arcaa.aero/
particularly equipment and facilities. And their arlier annual report
http://www.arcaa.aero/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/ARCAA-2009-Annual-Report-final.pdf

The West Sale ops were BAE systems from about 06 or 07 - later material here
http://australianaviation.com.au/2012/02/bae-demonstrates-uav-recovery-capability/
Herti was also flown at WSL google BAE Systems Herti. War machinery!

St Leonards and bit of the bay was Aerosonde. A little re this at page 5 of
http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WCMS:OLDASSET::svPath=/oar/rapac/minutes/,svFileName=vic071004.pdf
You will note we rejected the request for a large operating area over the
bay (in the interests of light a/c safety).

Also google "UAV Outback challenge Kingaroy" for some interest.

The UAV are able to go into holding mode and from memory this occurred at
Kingaroy for MED 1 or MAYDAY traffic on one occasion.

FAA - relaxation released in last few days
http://www.unmanned.co.uk/unmanned-vehicles-news/unmanned-aerial-vehicles-uav-news/faa-introduces-interim-step-that-allows-civil-uavs-under-25-pounds/

That should keep you occupied for a while!! There's also some tech info on
how they actually design the systems for later.

If Oz had gone for an all airspace ADS-B solution, it would have much sooner
enabled UAV operations because avoidance would be automatic. We haven't so
ops will still have limitations.

Enjoy
Brian

CASA divides UAVs into those above and below 150Kg. Below 150 Kg they
are considered as model aircraft although anything over 25kg is subject
to some restrictions. The outback challenge limits fixed wing entries to
150 Kg and rotary wing entries to 100Kg. Above 150 Kg, they are treated
much as normal aircraft.

Above 150Kg

Below 150Kg

I believe that surf lifesaving is testing small UAVs for surveillance of
people in the surf and sharks.
