Plasma TVs and operating them "flat"

I thought I read once that plasma TVs need to be upright, even when not on
and being transported. I want to source a reasonably cheap panel to build a
virtual pinball machine - something around 38-42" in size and I thought a
cheapish, older plasma might be a good start.

Can anyone clarify if operating a plasma which is "on it's back" with ample
ventilation will have any adverse effect on it?

I'd suggest putting a fan under it.

I believe the issue might be that the glass in plasma panels can(not always)
crack when transported flat. If in doubt maybe a LCD panel might be safer.
