Probably a concidence. Especially since he was killed by
Superboy-Prime who is much closer to being the original Superboy and
has been set up as a returning villain.
Still unresolved but it seems the family of one of the Superman
creators may get control of the Superboy copyright, unless DC can prove
that Superman and the original Superboy are the same character and not
that Superboy wasn't a new character derived from Superman (which it
the current legal standing and has been for many years)
Since DC own all the Superman Trademarks, though, Superboy is pretty
much unusable by anyone else, so the most likely outcome is DC handing
over money for temporary or perminent use of Superboy.
The other issue is what other Superboy elements were in the original
Superboy proposal... if they include Lana, Pete and the names Jonathon
and Martha for the Kents, Smallville is in trouble, there'd be issues
with Superman - The Movie, Lois & Clark...
