King of the cage 2012 - Tournament sheet
When:
14th and 15th of April.
We plan to start at 8am on Saturday morning - lots of games to go through and likely only 1 court available for most of the day.
The tournament will go on regardless of the weather, bring a raincoat.
Daylight savings is in effect so we will have limited pickup from 4pm at the courts.
A couple of lazy games before some casual drinks on Friday night 6pm at D.O.C (352 Karangahape Road) and meeting up with people who had to work and players getting there from abroad. We will assign your accomodation on the spot as well.
For your accomodation please bring a sleeping bag to be sure not to be cold at night as some players may not have extra linen or duvets. You’ll be hosted by Carol, Dasha, Stu, Mikey and leo. All accomodations are quite close to the courts.

Court Locations
Howe Street Courts, Central Auckland (54 Beresford St W,Freemans Bay, Auckland 1011)
Tennis sized courts, toilets in the park 100m.
From AKL airport take the blue bus (16$). Get down on Karangahape road. Head west on Karangahape Road. After the bridge over the motorway turn right. Go down the street to find the courts on the left side down the hill. If you’re lost, give us a call.
About the tournament:
King of the cage is the second edition of the hopefully an annual tournament. It is aimed at having fun and participation. We will have limited referees that are for keeping time and score. So keep your play clean. (The ref will step in if necessary)
We are proud that the King of the cage is a free tournament. However that also means that we are not sure to provide free food on lunch break. We apologise for this inconvenience and will ask you to take a few pennies for your food along the weekend. There is 2 food halls nearby and a number of Kebab shops. (The food hall has vegetarian and vegan options). A convenience store (Dairy) is located just around the corner.
We hope to have the Saturday tournament finished up by 5:30pm. After prize giving we will head out for celebration.
If you enjoy the tournament, t-shirts will be available to buy, benefits will go in the Auckland Polo piggy bank to help finance balls and equipment.
Format of the tournament:
Early Morning games:
3 Rounds of randomly drawn games for seeding purposes (Ranked 1-12). 2pts winner 1pt draw 0pt looser. Head to head,goal difference and then toss of a coin to decide ties in seeding places.
Main elimination stage.
Running a double elimination type tournament. Seeding from the 2 rounds above.
Schedule Saturday
Start: 8am
Break: No Break
Party till you puke: Nightfall (6pm) - puke.
Firsts games will start at 8am sharp.
At nightfall we’ll head out for dinner and prize giving.
On Sunday we will be running an individual tournament with with randomly picked teams each round. Individually you get 2pts win, 1pt draw - no points for a loss. Finals rounds will also be random teams for those that make the cut. Start time to be confirmed.
Refereeing and score keeping:
Each team will be in charge of refereeing games so that means you will probably be ref at least once. Each referee will, keep time, take score and report it to the main board after a game.
Referees will also be in charge of keeping fairplay and rules on the courts. (Players ref yourself so the refs don’t need to get involved)
Ref will call any shuffles, courtesy tap or else.
Ref will keep a ball if the played one has to go out the court so the game can carry on.
The king of the cage is run by players for players.
Specific rules of the king of the cage will be the followings:
-Morning games will be 10 minutes long or first team to 5 goals. (We need fast turnaround so have your team ready to be on court)
-Mallets shafts and handlebars must be capped!
-Helmets are mandatory!
-A shuffle will not grant you a goal, the team who shuffled will loose control of the ball to the other team and has to get back in defense.
-Malleting (putting a mallet under a wheel, ending in a crash) will request a courtesy tap from the player malleting.
-Ball going through the goal cones from the rear and ending up in a goal will not be counted as one, offending team loose control of the ball to the other team and has to get back in defense.
-Going trough the goal after shooting in will not be counted as a point.
-Scooping (lifting the ball) and Ball jointing (dragging ball on the ground with the top of a mallet head) are allowed in your team court side and has to end as a pass. No goals will be given for scooping and ball jointing.
-Each game will start with players rear wheel touching the fence , then 3,2,1, polo will be called by ref.
-Rest of the rules are standard, foot down = tapping, etc...
-Unappropriate tackles or charges will be called.
-Repeated fouls may result in double tapouts and eventually a timeout from the game.
- Don’t be a dick. (Ref yourself people -play hard, play fair)
More stuff you need to know:
Due to recent issue with some of the neighbourhood we would ask everyone of you to avoid drinking openly around the courts while the tournament goes on, if you have to drink please make sure that you don’t leave it lying around and keep it cleaned up. We had plenty of beers last year without any issues so if it we keep it tidy we should be fine.
Neighbourhood and tennis players will be noticed about the tournament at least a week before it goes on by leaving flyers on the court fence.
We have access to two courts but only one is really available due to people playing Tennis on the other court. We will try and steal early round robin games on the second court to gain a little extra time. The second court isn’t as fun to play on and we will play 12 minute games on the second court to allow for less game flow that is caused. (NB: round robin games are seeding games only so don’t be too upset what court you play on)
