IT Database directors or Managers meeting

Hello Atlanta MDF, I was wondering if there are any other managers or directors who are in charge of their database departments and would like to meet.  The purpose of the meeting is to get together and share ideas on how you run your departments. 

 

Are you going Agile? if so do you use Kanban, scrum, or just going lean?  What tools do you use to be agile or lean?

 

How do you handle deployments to production databases, what tools do you use?

 

What best practices you use in your department to ensure your DBAS are following them.  Do you adhere to Cobit, ITIL, or Soxs, how does your team handle this?

 

How do you handle non-critical support issues and make time for projects?

 

if any other Director or Manager would like to meet to share ideas, best practices, ask questions on how other teams are running their department.  Please comment on this thread and hopefully we can set something up.  It is like a CIO roundtable but for Managers/Directors who run a database department.

This sounds like a good idea. And if you  are interested to talk about your staff, if you have asked yourself if you are making a right hiring decision, why some people  are so hard to motivate and some work great and don’t require much guidance, support etc.  – I can weigh in  on that topic.

I would LOVE to be involved with this! As a long-time SQL Server
consultant I have yet to find a client that is even CLOSE to doing
Agile (of any flavor) database application development correctly.
Everyone always just waves a magic wand (if anything) at one of the
most fundamental tenets of agile - TESTING. I repeatedly see shops
get in trouble, and often blame everything but their processes for the
failures, regressions, etc.

I am not a Manager/Director as you ask for, but have a lot of
experience that I think can be valuable.

All, thanks to Geoff we will have a lunch session specifically towards those who manage database professionals at SQLSaturday on the 18th.  We will be discussing some of the topics from this thread as well as other topics.  Ed Wyatt is going to be the moderator/facilitator for the lunch session.  I am very excited and I hope to see all mangers/directors there.

Currently, they are trying to include some management topics in with the Professional Development VC, but IMHO I think that a Management Group a) has enough material that it needs a group all its own; b) that there are topics that are relevant to management that have nothing to do with ProDev [like how to figure out SQL Server Licensing] c) that managers are going to lose interest if they get 2 or 3 webinars a year that kind of hit on topics that are relevant to management.
