How many people watched the concert tonight? If you watch
network TV it was hard to miss.

I was disappointed that they did not introduce each
performer. They could have at least flashed the name on the
screen somewhere. As it was I didn't really recognize any of
them.

The best song was from a female group and the name of the
song seemed to be "I Hope".

I think that perhaps most of the songs were original
compositions for the concert except for "Who'll Stop The Rain".

The only song I muted was the rapper because it was just an
extremely poorly done piece and it was painful to listen to it.

'twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form.
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her, on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm.
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved
Everything up to that point had been left unresolved.
Try imagining a place where it's always safe and warm.
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail,
Poisoned in the bushes an' blown out on the trail,
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn.
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair.
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns.
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

Now there's a wall between us, somethin' there's been lost
I took too much for granted, got my signals crossed.
Just to think that it all began on a long-forgotten morn.
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount
But nothing really matters much, it's doom alone that counts
And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn.
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

I've heard newborn babies wailin' like a mournin' dove
And old men with broken teeth stranded without love.
Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn?
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes
I bargained for salvation an' they gave me a lethal dose.
I offered up my innocence and got repaid with scorn.
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country but I'm bound to cross the
line
Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine.
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born.
Come in, she said,
I'll give you shelter from the storm.

No. That probably would have been seen as pretty tasteless
since basically Amtrak pretty much lost everything down there.

I still would like to know whether the piece done by the
female group (was this possible the Dixie Chicks?) was an
original composition for the show or whether it was one of
their standards. It was clearly the best song in the entire
show and I cannot get the song's hook out of my mind. I'd
love to get a recording of the song though.

Here is my transcription:

Sunday morning I heard the preacher say:
Thou shalt not kill.
I don't wanna ______ nothing else
about killing, about _____ _____
Our children are watching us;
They put their trust in us.
They're gonna be like us.
Let's learn from our history
and do it differently.

I hope,
For more love, more joy and laughter.
I hope,
you'll have more then you ever need.
I hope
you'll have more happy every after.
I hope
we can all have more _____ _____ ____
and we can lose all of our pain and misery.

I hope.
I hope.

Oh Rose her man gets to rough
and all she can say
is he's a good man
he don't mean no harm;
brought up that way.
But our children are watching us;
They put their trust in us,
They're gonna be like us.
It's ok for us to disagree,
we can work it out lovingly.

I hope,
More love, more joy and laughter.
I hope,
You'll have more then you ever need.
I hope,
You'll have more happy every after,
I hope,
You can all have more _____ ____ ___
and you can lose all of your pain and misery.

I hope.
I hope.

There must be a way
to change what just went on.
No, I don't have all the answers.

I hope,
For more love, more joy and laughter.
I hope,
You'll have more then you ever need.
I hope,
There'll be more happy every after,
I hope,
You can all have more _____ ____ ___
and you can lose all of your pain and misery.

I hope.
I hope.
I hope.
I hope.
I hope.

That's the best I can get by transcribing. There were some
words I just couldn't make out.

I think one of the things that really makes this song work
is that they sing the verses in a minor key and then shift
to what sounds like G Major for the chorus. The dramatic
shift is one of the things that just makes the song stick to
my mind.

I think I came up with just a few more words than Ken. But I'm still
stuggling with one. Maybe someone can tell us what it is. And I know
nothing about minor keys, etc., but I agree it was the best song on
Shelter from The Storm. Thanks for directing us to to the video.

Sunday morning I heard the preacher say

'Thou shall not kill'
I don't wanna hear nothing else
about killing and about it's God's will

'Cause our children our watching us

They put their trust in us

They're gonna be like us

So let's learn from our history
and do it differently

I hope
for more love, more joy and laughter
I hope
We'll have more than we'll ever need
I hope
We'll have more happy every afters
I hope
We can <???> more fearlessly
And we can lose all the pain and misery

Rosie her man gets too rough
yet all she can say

They put their trust in us

Wow! You really filled in some of my missing words and got
it some great corrections as well - plus you straightened
out the punctuation. Listen again though - the three
choruses do not all use the same pronouns consistently and
there are a couple 'I hope' phrases missing in your version.
But overall, much imporoved over my transcription.

Is it possible that the chorus line might be "We can all
live more fearlessly" ? But she really really slurs it together.

I'd nominate this song for a Grammy without question.

I did hear the changing pronouns and thought I caught them all, but
maybe not.

I agree, I think it might be 'live more fearlessly'. It was strange
that all three times she sang that stanza (it is a stanza isn't it?
I'm clueless about music) she wasn't clear. I was leaning toward
'live' or 'love more fearlessly', but since they already sang about
love it didn't make so much sense.

Ken since we're deciphering it, I think we can have the final say
<grin> and we'll go with 'live more fearlessly'.

(I also noticed I said 'happy everY after' every time! I've corrected
it.

What she did was a basic vocal error - she did not provide
enough separation between the previous word "all", which
ends with an L and "live" which starts with a L. I sing in
choral groups and this is a common error.

I hope that the version they release on their album is
actually done a bit more carefully. There were two places
where she "popped" a "p" into the microphone and there was
no pop-filter on the mike. However, if they do re-record it
I hope they don't lose the emotion that they had in this
performance.

Ken, I'm impressed! Of course, I'm tone deaf so I hear so l appreciate
so little of the music or the actual vocal. I listen to the words.
That's why I enjoyed Harry Chapin's music so much. When I saw him in
concert, everyone applauded the first few notes of a song he started
while I had to wait to hear a word or two.

I'll have to listen one more time (making it maybe the 100th time!) and
listen for the popped p.

I agree, I hope when they record the song they don't lose that emotion.
It was powerful.

Dee wrote:

Anyone can go through the technicalities of playing music
and most can do technical singing. It is the emotion that
makes music into an art form.

Many years ago when I lived in Florida I knew a guy who made
a good part of his living by teaching violin and called
himself "Gypsy Fiddler" on the internet. One time we were
both at a gathering of friends and one of the other people
there was a young woman who happened to be one of his
students. We finally got both of them to pull out their
violins and the student played first. Technically she was
absolutely accurate. Her timing was perfect. Every note was
right on pitch. There wasn't a thing that could be
criticized about her music from a technical standpoint. But
yet there wasn't any of her soul in what she played. The
teacher then picked up his violin and played the same piece
and it came alive under his fingers because the music did
come from his soul. All of us recognized the difference with
perhaps the student being the only one who didn't understand
what had just happened.

I don't know what was going on in the minds of the Dixie
Chicks as they recorded that piece. It obviously wasn't done
in front of an audience so there was no immediate feedback
from that type of source. From what I could tell it was
recorded in a a recording studio (as opposed to a sound
studio), but something clicked just right. Other then the
two obvious pops, the only other thing I'd suggest that they
reconsider is the slide guitar bridge at the end since it
didn't add anything substantive to the essence of the song
itself.

Only a hundred times? I think I hit that the first time I
played it in a loop. I've been trying to cut back since
then. I was wrong there are three pops. All on the word
"pain" in the choruses.

Okay, maybe I listented to it more than 100 times too. I didn't want
to sound totally nuts.

I wanted to learn to play the piano but my parents were told many years
ago I could learn to play, but never appreciate it. That's probably
true. I have tried to learn as an adult and I'm totally hopeless!
Music will never be my talent, and that's probably why I have such a
huge respect for it. I have to admit I stopped listening after the
60s and early 70s. Ouch!

I can sight-read music without any difficulty. It is
difficult for me to conceptually understand how anyone
cannot read music because I have been reading the treble
clef since I was 6 and the bass clef since I was 9. But yet
I understand that there are many people in the choral groups
that I sing with who can only tell that one note is higher
or lower then the one that precedes it but they don't know
what the actual note is. It totally baffles me how they are
able to sing complex pieces.

While I have a great appreciation for music, at best I am
only a technical singer - although I can easily hear the
difference between a technical singer and someone who really
emotes music. I play a bit of tenor saxophone, but even then
I really just know how to put the notes together as I read
them from the page, I can't truly "perform" and give the
music character as I play it. So that is my great
frustration for one of my greatest dreams was to be able to
play the blues from my heart and really have it contain a
part of me - but I've never achieved that. As for the
singing, I'm good as a voice among many voices, but no one
will ever ask me to sing a solo because I just don't have a
solo voice. The secret to choral singing is that the chorus
doesn't need individual performers - they simply need people
who are able to blend in with the other voices in their
section, and I can do that fairly well.

Thank goodness someone else doesn't know all the performers by site.
Several years ago when Saturday Night Live had their 25th anniversary
musical special I was amazed at how few entertainers I knew as time
passed. Then there were those who were on the show all three decades -
Neil Simon, Annie Lennox, etc.
