I am familiar with two major suburban areas of Atlanta:
1) the cities north of 285 up i-400 such as Roswell and Alpharetta in
Fulton County. Roswell/Alpharetta area offers a low-crime area, good
schools (I've heard), as well as lots of shoppping areas, golf
courses, etc.
The downside to the area is that high growth=heavy traffic and Fulton
County property tax is among the highest in the area. I've lived in
Roswell for the past six years and have watched property values grow,
traffic on 400 get worse, and scores of very luxurious subdivisions
(and some tacky ones) get built.
2) the cities of West Cobb County such as Marietta, Smryna, etc.
usually offer a little more home for the money and taxes are lower.

To JD:
I don't know what this person (Kudzu) is doing, but he's either paranoid or
pretending to be paranoid. I would just ignore him.
I posted a newspaper article that was on topic for this group and there was
an interest in it from several people. However, here are a couple of replies
I received from kudzu. He imagines he's some kind of moderator for this group,
I suppose.

Oh, I'm for real...no pretending here! :-)

Ian Deluca is the moderator for this group - not me. Although I am
now quite entertained by the cybermyths surrounding my presence
here....conspiracy theories abound!

I wouldn't immediately rule out the downtown area unless you think you
simply don't want to deal with so much as the thought of crime. I have
cousins who live around Grant Park, and there are some wonderful old
houses to be had in your range. It's close to I-20 and the I-85/75. It's
near the stadia, etc. Living in downtown is just rewarding in other
ways...character, stuff to do, etc...sure there is more to deal with that
you might just want to avoid, but I'd ten times rather be downtown than
out in the suburbs...
Trev
Seen the houses down there. Impressive. Area lacks spirit. Sad,
because there is truly SO much there. Not bad folk there, just not
motivated. No hanger's on corners. No serious "bad" area.
It's one of the places I'd least like to see take a slide. Real
homes, nice places, lotsa decent folk in there. I'd be happy there.
