Roanoke 34 Asheville 28

Our First game having been knock out of the Matrix a game we need to win  to lift our sprits  after the disappointing result against triad It seemed  hard  to get ourselves motivated for the game. Roanoke  was a big side both backs and pack even though we can play better than them it was hard when we did not have the mind set and were down to fourteen men. A Roanoke player started a fight, and should have been sent off, but the ref did not see it only the effect of Dave Smyth running pass him to take out the Roanoke player. He got a red card for but was sent off for verbally abusing the ref; lesson keep you mouths shut! From the start, we put them under pressure for the first ten minutes then we let it slip. Roanoke tactic was to kick the ball territorially advantage. With their kicking, Asheville was under pressure in their half or 22 loosening us valuable ground.

We started off well we held the line well both defensively and on the attack we had a good set of backs both new and old which would have  worked rather well if we had pass the ball quicker and to the wings.  After ten minutes you could see that we where going to make it difficult for our self’s, and this would be another hard slog with very little given and it would come down to mistakes the biggest mistake was not tackling Roanoke players on the break which gave them there six tries people stood thinking others where going to do the job.

The pack played where up and down with bad and excellent play during the game in the scrum it was down to size Roanoke wheeled us needed to get down lower to stop the wheel. The lines outs where not as good as we have had in past games they out jump us and read our call which we did not change we had some scrappy ball which we managed to get the ball out. Our rucking was not as good as it could have been we have done far better in previous games We did not look for quicker from the rucks, we would lean in on not looking for quick ball we made some good attacking playing allowing us to probably score tries but the ref would blow us up and give Roanoke a scrum down which slowed the game down and gave Roanoke good territorial advantage especially when we where down to thirteen men. But we played far better when we had thirteen men because we knew we had to keep them out of the try zone. We put effort in to win the ruck which was rather disappointing when :placeRoanoke would get a penalty for us killing the ball hands in and going over the top of the ruck.

We denied ourselves a attacking game Roanoke they open the score with a  four tries in the first half due to mistake  in not tacking their play letting him run thorough us. We had chance but where lost due to bad hands passing or take it back into Roanoke killing the ball making it a bad decision for Asheville backs which would  have given us a good advantage on over loads on the Roanoke side

But we gave Roanoke the game that should have been a Asheville . Unfortunately we where unable to capitalize on our play it was a disappointing game of rugby from my point of view Asheville where unable to gain on the mistake of Roanoke . Jonny was man of the match with is hard work in the front row and attacking great moves with pace and vision to see again.

I was disappointed. This was a game we should have won, but lost because, not thinking, not tacking, and our fitness has slipped. If we want to win chaps and be a great team and club effort and dedication is what’s required both at practice and in the game.

Let's show up strong to JC. They will surely pull out
all of the stops to try to avenge the smack down that
we put on them last time. Kick off is at 2:00. We
are meeting at the North Merrimon Ingles at 11.
Directions to the pitch are attached.

Cheers!
Steve
