Manipur government Thursday agreed to conduct a magisterial enquiry into the killing of a youth by the state police commandos in alleged “fake encounter” on last Monday even as a same demand for another killing incident was turndown.

JAC convener said that the government has agreed to conduct the magisterial enquiry into the killing of Wahengbam Jayenta (42) of Kumbi in Bishnupur district by a combined force of Assam Rifles and state police commandos on February 6 night.

Earlier, police had claimed that a pistol loaded with some live rounds was recovered from the spot where Jayenta was killed in an encounter.

However, alleging that he was killed in “fake encounter” and not related with any underground outfit, the family with the support of local people has been refused to take back the dead body which was lying at RIMS morgue.

However, after an assurance from the government to conduct magisterial enquiry, JAC agreed to take back the dead body, JAC member said.

A talk between the representatives of the JAC formed against the killing of Jayenta and Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh was held around 11 am today at Chief Minister’s secretariat.

After a long negotiation on the demands of the JAC, an agreement was brought about, JAC members who took part in the talk informed.
From the JAC side, conduct of a judicial enquiry, payment of ex-gratia and government job to a member of the bereaved family were demanded, he said adding that chief minister convinced to conduct magisterial enquiry instead of judicial enquiry but agreed to consider other demands after the magisterial enquiry.

Another talk in connection with the killing of one Thongam Sana (25) of Wangoo Sandangkhong, Bishnupur district by the police commandos failed as police claimed that he was a PREPAK cadre. With the talk failed, the JAC has decided to go ahead with an intensified form of agitations.
