What is the individual artist's expressive role (ego) within the collective societal perspective? Is our job to define and recreate - lead the society, or just to function within it? Is it OK to function outside society?

Is a subject perspective (assignment) ex: "Green Art" "Feminist art" "New Media," a distraction in the studio and in an artist's efforts to grow as a creative thinker, or a boost to their vision and work?
