Art just started selling a camera that COULD be a great ‘standard’ for ARLISS.

http://www.boostervision.com/cart/scripts/prodView.asp?idProduct=124

If you mount one of these on the upper airframe looking up, in theory it should capture the deployment of the CANSAT (and maybe more).

The aerodynamic shape should lend itself well to being external and easy to add to any airframe.

It’s a good price too – it’ll be interesting to see the recording results.

There is another model that goes for $69  - http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=md-80&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=3286372901&ref=pd_sl_4yz77trxsz_b . Sticking a .25” 90 degree prism from http://www.anchoroptics.com/catalog/product.cfm?id=357  prism on the lens gives look down. Best part, the camera is sound activated, so it records during the flight and saves the video.

I have this camera and haven’t tried using the audio switch on it – not sure it would ever get quiet enough on a rocket – especially if you have beeping electronics.

The mirror prism is interesting – have you tried it yet?

Anyway – the MD80 only really records 20fps despite the 30fps claim – at least mine does.

Mind you this booster vision one may not do it’s claimed 25fps.

What I like most about this bullet configuration is its simplicity for this task of monitoring the deployment of the CANSAT.  In this case it wouldn’t be used for getting the look down.

Hi Arnold, I could have sold those as well.
I wanted something nobody had to add anything to to use on a rocket ;)

Of course if you wish to save money, that is the way to go.

Hi Art,

If I had known you had MD80s I would have bought them from you. I did not buy them to save money. It was one of the few units, at the time I purchased them, that when saves the video if power runs out before one can get to it. Plus, it is ridiculously small and has a two hour run time. I bought it to use with a small hood containing a .25 inch prism. The hood attaches to the exterior of the airframe. The camera sits inside to keep drag at a minimum. More often than not, I just have the lens pointing out and use no hood, again to reduce drag.

I am sure your unit is excellent as are all your products. You do not sell junk. I will probably purchase a few from you in the future. My son, who just happened to have qualified for his technician, general and extra licenses this summer with a three week trip to Turkey stuck in the middle, wants to use both video telemetry and micro DV recording on his rockets.

Arnold, have you posted the footage you shot through the prism? I would love to see it and pictures of how you installed it.

As one who has built one too many mirror hoods, this sounds like a viable alternative!

As for cost savings, yeah if you add the hood + camera + all the shipping, it's about the same as this camera.

FWIW- Vidroc 7 uses one + a wide angle lens designed for Cell phones.

Oh and 'by one' I meant the MD80 - as the VideoRocketry.com dude, I've got two of the MD80s (one failed already) and couple Gum Sticks, then the Aiptek HDs...blah blah blah.

My ARLISS bird suffered a catastrophic failure a couple seasons ago but I'm rebuilding and planning to use the Boostervision camera for recording CANSAT deployment as I hope that will be useful to the students.

I was very much considering selling MD80s, till the GearCam-DVR came along , the MD80s are good units.

Yes it very important and I've tested that as a feature of our GearCam-DVR as well.

I've found that all the little cams that have rechargeable batteries don't
suffer from this old problem (and I've tested a few).

Logically - because you can't monitor the remaining power it makes sense to
have this function.

Now - the other cameras with spring loaded batteries are a different story.
Many still suffer when the G forces are enough to temporarily break the
power.

Great idea, I'm going to give it a shot if get it in time, I always wanted to see a ARLISS payload deploy.

Thanks Art and Jamie....  Art, throw that sucker in the mail so I can get it mounted before I leave :)

As soon as I do, I will post the videos on YouTube under AMTR1.

Send us a link once you do! Thanks - I'll be real interested in seeing the prism trick.
