Subject: Veteran Changes
Dereliction of Duty on my part

Below is the Press Release I was supposed to post here yesterday
afternoon..... and only discovered a while ago.....in my mess of
emails and trappings... once more, my apologies to all of you.

It is from Tom Helms, State Co-Coordinator:

"The method we have been using to acknowledge the service of our
veterans is a concern for me because of the images imparted to
visitors to the web site. Currently, the public view that a visitor
will see has the given name(s) and surname of a veteran separated by
the parenthetical information related to their service. This results
from the fact that the notation had been entered on the line for given
names.  An example:

John (Veteran, WW I, USN; CPO) DOE

To avoid this problem we should begin to place abbreviated notation
after the surname with more detail about an individual's service in
the comments section.  Thus, the example shown above will become:

            John DOE (VETERAN, WW I)

And, the more complete information that would be written in the
comments is as follows:

            Veteran, WWI

            USN, CPO

When a visitor pulls up a particular record they will see that all of
the information entered (e.g., given name, surname, cemetery name,
county name, biographical data, etc.) is centered below the photograph
of the gravestone.

I have begun the process of editing the current records that have
notation for veterans on the given name line. County Coordinators will
not be expected to edit the records for their particular counties. We
will continue to be able to search for veterans’ interred in our
counties, the particular conflict in which they served (if any), and
branches of the armed forces, by using the “contains the text” feature
when searching either surnames or comments."

Thank you.

Tom Helms
