Re:  Please Stop Supporting Animal Abuse in Your Restaurants

Dear Leader Pelosi:

I was shocked to learn that veal is served by Moana Restaurant Group serves in four of its restaurants, each called Piatti, in Mill Valley, California; La Jolla, California; Denver, Colorado; and San Antonio, Texas.

You should know what is involved to produce the "ultra-tender veal" that is served in the restuarants in which you have invested. The veal industry is built on torture - systematically inflicting unimaginable suffering on over 62,000 innocent newborn calves per month, torn from their mothers hours after birth, and placed in intensive confinement until they are slaughtered. Undercover investigations have revealed that many calves have their throats slit, their legs hacked off, and some are even skinned while they are still alive and fully conscious.

If born a male, the calf will be raised to produce veal.    He will suffer several hellish weeks of emotional pain after being taken from his mother immediately after birth;  he will never know the caress of his mother's tongue, or the warmth of her presence.  (Animals are sentient beings with intelligence, emotions, and psychology.) To produce the favored white meat, he will be confined to a crate so small he can't turn around, sit down, or move. This lack of movement causes his flesh to become "tender" because the muscles are barely exercised.  It also gives the calf chronic diarrhea and anemia.  If the demand for veal is low when he is born, he may be left outside to die from dehydration and starvation so that food and water is not wasted on a useless commodity.

If the calf is a female, her life is equally horrific. She will not only be forced to bear a calf every year, but will be forced to give milk seven months of her nine-month pregnancy.  With the intensive factory farming techniques, she will be forced to produce 100 pounds of milk a day, which is ten times more than she would naturally produce.  Because of the overwhelming stress imposed on her, 85% of cows develop a painful bacterial infection (mastitis). These suffering cows then receive massive doses of antibiotics and hormones which become part of the milk we ingest and feed our children. (National Institutes of Health and the FDA suspect milk as contributing to the existence of antibiotic-resistent bacteria now challenging our population.)

After three to four years of continuous impregnation and milk production, she will be shocked with stun guns, kicked, and dragged into cattle cars when she's sold for slaughter.  Her calcium-depleted, brittle pelvic bones often shatter while taking the first steps off the truck.  These, among other illnesses, cause her be be treated as a "downer."  She may be thrown off the truck to die on a pile of dead and dying animals to await processing by rendering plants where her body will be boiled into a mass of gluten to be used for the pet food and processed feed industries.

As one of America's most powerful progressive politicians, I am sure you are aware that being progressive should include being as humane and cruelty-free as possible, as well as green.

Please adopt a No-Veal policy at all of your restaurants and, if possible, a no factory-farming policy as well.

Sincerely,

Friday - Tell Nancy Pelosi To Stop Supporting Animal Abuse In Denver

January 11 veal protest at Piatti restaurant begins at 5:30 p.m.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi profits from animal abuse via the sale of veal at four restaurants in which she is an investor. Pelosi hypocritically claims to support the humane treatment of animals yet has not addressed IDA's request, and over 8,000 IDA activist messages, to remove veal from her restaurants. She obviously is not taking responsibility for the pain and suffering of animals that she is directly causing.

The veal industry is built on torture - systematically inflicting unimaginable suffering on over 62,000 innocent newborn calves per month, stripped away from their mothers hours after birth and placed in intensive confinement until they are slaughtered. Undercover investigations have revealed that many calves have their throats slit, their legs hacked off, and some are even skinned while they are still alive and fully conscious.

One of these veal-peddling restaurants is Piatti in Denver. Join us during Piatti's dinner rush as we send a clear message to one of America's most powerful "progressive" politicians: Veal is bloody wrong! We are asking Pelosi to align her public "green" and "humane" persona with her personal ventures by adopting a No Veal policy at all of her restaurants.

What you can do:

Please dress nicely and bring your friends and family to this important day of action. Posters and leaflets will be provided. Please leave your companion animals at home.
