My name is Beth Hogge and I am the Shelter Manager of the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society in Gloucester, VA.

There is a family in our county who just lost everything in a house fire. They are living in a hotel. They used to have 2 production pigs and one died for whatever reason (neighbors think it froze to death but there is no proof). The other one remains on the property where the house burned. The neighbors kid is supposed to be caring for it but that is not happening. Animal Control has been out several times answering complaints about the pig not being cared for. This pig is in a pen outside by itself on a lot where the house burned to the ground and he is barely being cared for. Anyway to make a long story short, the owner has decided that they are willing to sign the pig over to animal control or to us. We have moved to a new facility and have no where currently to house a pig. Do you have any advice or anyone who might be able to take the pig. Its name is Shaggy and it is an intact male without tusks…yet (as per animal control). It is white and animal control estimates the weight to be around 250 lbs. I have asked if animal control or the owners can help with transport or getting the pig neutered and the only assistance we can get from them is to haul the pig no more than 1 hour away. The owners are unable to help with anything right now. Do you have any suggestions? Please help if you can or if you know of anyone who might be able to help.

Thanks for all you do for the animals, Beth Hogge Shelter Manager GMHS
