Police: Dog Pinned Down, Set On Fire

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Greenville police are looking for someone who committed a horrific act of animal cruelty.

Police and firefighters responded to a report of a house fire in the 200 block of Perry Avenue just after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The officer who responded said that firefighters found a dog house in the back yard of a home turned over with smoke coming out of it.

The firefighters said inside the dog house they found a dog that had been set on fire.

The dog was chained and had a cinder block on its head preventing it from moving.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and transported the dog for medical care.

Veterinarian Ann Malphrus, with North Greenville Animal Hospital, is caring for the dog, whose name is Pookie.

She says he is in a lot of pain.

The worst burns are on his nose, but both of his corneas are damaged and scarring could cause him to go blind.

"He can really just barely open his eyes," Malphrus said.

She said in 22 years as a veterinarian, this is the first time she has ever had to treat an animal intentionally set on fire.

Malphrus said: "This dog has no voice. He can't say who did this. He certainly didn't

deserve it.  You wonder what would make someone be so cruel and insensitive."

Malphrus said she thinks Pookie will live, but she's not sure how the burns will affect him.

The house where the dog was found was up for sale, but the owner had left Pookie there to keep an eye on things.

The dog's owner surrendered her rights on Tuesday night, saying she could not afford the veterinarian bills.

Police said a man told them that he saw a "tall, skinny black man wearing a black hat and jacket" standing near the dog house moments before the fire was reported.

Neighbor Geraldine Boyd said:

"That dog's been there 11 or 12 years.  He never did anything to anybody. Only the devil could do that harm."
