With a new ban on puppy mills taking effect at the start of the year,
the Oregon Humane Society has joined an animal rights group in
offering assistance to breeders who have too many dogs.

The bill, which passed the Legislature in June and was signed by Gov.
Ted Kulongoski, bans breeders from having more than 50 dogs that are
at least 2 years old and are used primarily for breeding.

In reaching out to breeders, the Humane Society of the United States
will take calls and coordinate pickups with the Oregon Humane Society,
which will provide shelter and work to get the animals adopted.
