The Miami-Dade commission unanimously passed a proposal Tuesday to turn Miami-Dade Animal Services into a no-kill animal shelter. A feasibility report will be due back to the committee within six-months with financial support suggestions and recommendations in order to implement the new program.
Animal Services has been criticized for their exceptionally high rate of euthanasia. Because the facility accepts over 30,000 animals a year and accepts all animals, the organization claims that many are either too sick or not adoptable.
According to CBS Miami, the shelter saves 72 percent of the dogs brought in, but the euthanasia rate of cats is much higher. In order to be considered a no-kill-shelter model, 90 percent of the animals must be saved. A ten percent rate of euthanasia for health reasons, temperament, and other issues is in the acceptable range.
