Hi,

I am resending this bug report since I have not received any feedback
during the last few days.

I have encountered recurring critical problems when using aquamacs on
different Desktops simultaneously. This happens very frequently
(although not every single time, somehow).

I use OSX 10.8.3.
When I open different files with aquamacs on different Desktops
several annoying and/or critical issues and problems happen, as
described below in order of increasing severity and disruption.

Let us say that I open file_01 on Desktop 1 and then file_04 on Desktop 4.

Issue A:
When I open file_04 on Desktop 4, I am automatically switched back to
Desktop 1. Of course, on Desktop 1 only file_01 is visible, and I have
to manually switch back to Desktop 4 to see the file_04.
This is a minor annoyance, but it *always* happen.

Issue B:
When I work on file_01 and then I go back to work on file_04 and I try
to open another tab on it occasionally there is a bug, and a new
separate aquamacs instance (i.e. window) appears, rather than a tab.
If I move back and forth between desktops, sometimes the new window
merges as a tab, on its own.
This is quite irritating, in particular as the behaviour seems erratic
and I can never predict what is going to happen.
Sometimes this happens even if I am just trying to open another file
within emacs (C-c C-f)

Issue C:
When I work on file_01 on Desktop 1 and then I move to file_04 on
Desktop 4 and I try to close with C-x C-c, often a new (completely
blank) aquamacs windows appears, and the entire aquamacs freezes.
Aquamacs becomes completely unresponsive, even the red/yellow/green
buttons to the top-left fail to produce any effects. If I try to move
away from Desktop 4, the system automatically brings me back there
after one second or so (which is a severe problem, since I had the
activity monitor on another Desktop, so I could not access it to
force-quit aquamacs).
In the end, the only solution that I found was to open a terminal and
force-quit from the command line.

It appears that the interaction of aquamacs with different Desktops is
very problematic.
Since I always work with at least four Desktops active, this is
becoming a major difficult for me in using aquamacs.

I would be grateful if you could solve these problems, in particular
issue C which is crippling.

Thank you.

Matteo

Matteo,

I didn't see your first bug report.

Some of these things we can probably fix. The last issue, related to the empty frame, is more difficult. These frames exist because Emacs is designed such that there is at least one frame available. We therefore create the frame titled *empty* (in a hidden state) to work around this issue when no visible frames are present.

How do you open those files?
Can I reproduce this with no further settings?
I may need step-by-step instructions, starting with "Start Aquamacs without customizations" from the "Help/Diagnose and Report Bug" menu.

No, a separate Aquamacs instance would be a separate process.
Do you mean a new frame appears when you press Command-T to create a new tab?

I've never seen this happen. I would need a reproducible test case to address this issue.

I agree that this is not a good situation. It is difficult to address, however, and again, a minimal test case would be helpful.
Is it the case that in this situation, Aquamacs asks a question (in the echo area/minibuffer) in some frame somewhere and blocks everything else?

Matteo,

Try evaluating the following (or put it in your Preferences.el / .emacs):

(defun aquamacs-handle-app-activated ()
"Aquamacs has been activated.
Ensure that there is a (hidden) frame in the current space."
(interactive)
(raise-frame))

Does that improve issues A and C?

Hi David,

thank you very much for your reply and your help.

I will perform the test as soon as I am able to, and let you know
whether that solves the problem.
If does not, I will send you a step-by-step description of how to
reproduce (hopefully) the issue.

Thanks a lot,

Matteo

I included the lines above in my .emacs and reopened two files with
aquamacs in two different Desktops (say, 1 and 4).
This created a new problem, unseen so far: when I moved to Desktop 4,
I was automatically "bounced back" to Desktop 1 (similar to my Issue
A, except that it was now permanent).
I had to comment out those lines to have things back to normal.

Regarding the other points:

I almost always open my files from the command line, e.g.
open plot_file.ps
if you could please tell me how to start aquamacs without
customization from the command line I'd happy to experiment.

Exactly. A new aquamacs frame (i.e. a separate window including
buttons etc.) appears.

As I said, this problem does not happen everytime, I am not sure how
to force-reproduce it.
Typically it happens the first time that I perform one of the
following actions just after opening aquamacs in Desktop 4 (when it's
already open in Desktop 1):
- opening a new file with C-x C-f (this produces a new tab with the
new opened file, not a new frame, when the system is working as
designed)
- search with C-s
- copy text from somewhere else with Command-V

Interestingly, I should note that - even when the problem is not there
- the instance of aquamacs opened on Desktop 4 does not seem to be
fully independent/separate as I would expect, but it looks somehow to
know about the one opened on Desktop 1: in fact, if I kill all the
buffers active in the aquamacs frame of Desktop 4, when I close the
last one, rather than remaining with an empty frame, I can see there
the content visualized in the frame of Desktop 1.

I haven't managed to reproduce this problem today. I forgot if there
was a question in the echo/minibuffer yesterday, but I know for sure
that clicking on any position of the frame produced no effect,
including the red button that should just close the frame. It is like
the frame was completely frozen, not just hanging there waiting for a
input on the minibuffer.

Thank you for your help.

Cheers,
Matteo

I can't reproduce. I have uploaded a few changes. Try the 3.x nightly build that's on the server now.
If you still have problems, please give me exact step by step instructions.

Call the binary in Auqmacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Aquamacs and give it "-q" as argument. "open" may be able to do the equivalent.
Well, I think you misunderstand how applications/processes and Spaces work on OS X.
However, when you delete frame (or tab or window), Aquamacs kills the buffer unless it is visible in some other window or tab.

OK, I have committed another change relating to using "open" to open files and create files on various spaces. I reproduced some of your reported issue, and my changes improve the situation. (Of course, they may cause other issues.)

Thanks for working with me on this!
