Subject: AIS traffic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a question

Hello,

The map in Halifax, Nova Scotia does not appear to be updating AIS.
* I started regularly visiting this map a couple of weeks ago, I am sure it
was displaying AIS traffic, but then it stopped.
* There may have been an AIS receiver active but I don't know.
* When I search around this area, I do see AIS objects, but none of those
are displayed on the map.
* It is possible this is normal behaviour, I'm not sure. There are many
places that have AIS vessels near-by, but they may all have receivers. I
see that Boston is not showing AIS traffic as well.

If it turns out, that only areas with an AIS receiver actually get mapped,
then I may try to put together a receiver over the next month or so for
Halifax, NS.

Thanks!

-Doug

Have you created a filter that might cause the AIS objects to not show?

Best regards,

Yeah, there needs to be an AIS receiver in the area. You can see the
current list of receivers there: http://aprs.fi/page/ais_sites

Seems like there are no AIS receivers feeding aprs.fi from Halifax, Nova
Scotia currently.

Hessu,

Thanks for the quick reply! I'll play around over the next month and
see what I can get running.

If you're looking for a fun, low dollar project and are within RF range of
the area you're interested in, try tapping a marine VHF set and decoding the
packets yourself.  Marinetraffic.com and discriminator.nl have pretty much
all you need.  If you get it working, you'll become the (or at least a) AIS
source for Halifax and you can forward the data however you see fit.
