It is very easy to sign up with Google Apps using your "first@last.name" email address. Google Apps will then offer to let you administer the domain "last.name".

If you registered a third-level domain (i.e., first.last.name), the second level becomes "shared" and unavailable.

Remember to create the account using "first@first.last.name"
