I hope this will be helpful to some of the members. In the past I
used some Avery labels for CD and DVD disks. Using my own captions and
pix I was rather proud of the result. I've learned to my chagrin that
my iMac will not recognize those disks, it spits them back out as
unreadable.

My G4 and an external LaCie CD and DVD reader does read those disks so
they are not lost to me.

But you might want to think twice before applying paper labels to the
CD and DVD disks.

Ouch! You absolutely have my sympathies. Thank goodness they will
read elsewhere so you can make new ones.

After some questionable feedback a few years ago, I started not
labeling my more important CDs/DVDs with the labels but write with a
Sharpie marker around the middle (where there would be no data). I
have even used the "minature" labels designed to go around the center
and had written on those. With your report, I am more than a little
concerned about all those I have done prior to that even though they
may not have been Avery labels.

Thank you ever so much for sharing this information. I would also be
interested in what others have to report.

Actually, Glenna, CDs/DVDs are written from the inside out.

Good point, Peren.

Okay, folks, apparently, it wasn't clear what part of the middle that
I write on where there is no data; it is the little clear circle
around the hole. If one puts a full-size label on the CD/DVD, that is
the part that is left exposed. It's not much space but certainly
better than having one with no markings at all.

Speaking from experience when we could only use eight (or was it six?)
letters for file names (not counting the extension), I can assure
everyone you can be quite creative with naming conventions to fit in
the space allowed. Though it is difficult to write in that tiny area,
if it protects the ability to use the data, it is worth the extra
effort (and subsequent guessing games<g>).
