Dear Ice Age Trail Supporter,

It’s quiet now in the woods and prairies; biting insects, high humidity and vibrant color skipped town with the frost and took with them the lion’s share of Ice Age Trail hikers and volunteers. This is still a good time of year to use the Trail (no month is without its charms) but no one will fault you if you kick off your boots, fire up the woodstove, and sit back to think about the fun adventures you had in 2011.

The Ice Age Trail Alliance’s Mobile Skills Crew (MSC) program had another season rich in such adventures. At 10 events, 775 volunteers contributed 20,546.75 hours (about one-third of the IATA’s total volunteer effort for the year) to building new Ice Age Trail segments and sprucing up existing ones. Participants learned new trail-building skills, then took their “Trail Eyes” home to share locally. They challenged themselves to take on leadership roles, visited unfamiliar parts of the Ice Age Trail, made new friends, furthered old friendships (one of which led to a marriage), and saw glorious sunsets and inspiring sunrises from their trailside front-row seat. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to make the year a big success.

If you enjoy using the Ice Age Trail, the efforts of our volunteers at MSC events and projects spearheaded by our 21 volunteer chapters have yielded some wonderful new hikes, with 25 new miles of the Ice Age Trail open for business and another 7.4 miles significantly improved . Some examples…the Wood Lake Segment in Taylor County and the Grandfather Falls Segment in Lincoln County received some well-earned TLC. A bit further east in Lincoln County, Northwoods Chapter volunteers built the new Alta Junction Segment. We extended the beautiful new Plover River Segment near Wausau in Marathon County. The new Arbor Ridge Segment just outside of Janesville and a major new piece of the Montrose Segment in southern Dane County give hikers in the southern part of the state some scenic destinations to explore. To the east, Lakeshore Chapter volunteers crafted a great new section of the Dunes Segment in Manitowoc County. Visit our website to see notes and maps for these and all the rest of our trail-building triumphs around Wisconsin.

While it’s fun to look back, it’s just as fun to look ahead. To that end, we hope you'll take a look at the slate of MSC events below, sharpen your pencils, and block off some dates in your 2012 planners. We’ll send a complete season preview email, complete with pre-registration info, in the coming weeks.

Happy Holidays and Happy Trails!

Sincerely,

The Ice Age Trail Alliance Staff
