Just out of curiousity, from having looked at various "web API"s as they are called, are they not just command lines ?
You type in a command with attributes/parameters on some kind of UI device, according to some kind of syntax, send it across some communication channel using a protocol , it gets processed at some end point, finds data on some kind of storage medium (which might be in same location but more usually remote!) or uses an algorithm on some storage medium and sends a block of data back to the UI it started from and you can do with that data what you will.......lists,diagrams,photographs.......the possibilities are endless!!!
Having started on IT away back in the late 70's and stayed with the technology all this way until I am now in 2013, with a tablet that runs Windows 8(!!!), some of you out there may remember GEORGE-3 and Digital Command Language
and even DOS, a web API is surely just a command line ?
I am constantly amused by the way basic concepts get hyped up in IT !!
