The documentation is fine, you meant the wiki?

I just received the disk that burned from the hosting company.
The disk is damaged -- "click-click" sound.
Now, I'm trying to found a company that can restore the data. It's
going to cost a lot.

That's very bad to heard, shouldn't the hosting service have a backup
maintenance every month or so?
Some hosting providers do it so.. like the Vps hosting I am with..
they do it periodically every 3 months or so..
I don't know if you guys really thinking forward in Ape ver 2, Hope
you still find it profitable to continuing coding..
regards and thanks for the effort..

Now that Louis has solved the  MySql 'problem', I guess it is time to solve the next 'main problem': the documentation.

I am volunteering for this!

I will start to revive the documentation, once it is 'ready' I will put it online.
Some time ago I scraped the archives of the wayback machine, so I will start from there.
If I recall correctly I must have a local copy of the 'ancient' 'how to write a server side c module' somewhere in my backups.

Somewhere in this group I read the suggestion/request to use the github wiki. I have the opinion that the documentation should be on the ape-project.org website. To avoid double work, I will start with simple wiki-formatting offline, that would be the most flexible way, so we can decide later how to continue.

For the people who are in favour of 'eat your own dogfood', please feel free to create a Ape-project wiki application. :-)

I will keep you informed on my progress in the upcomming weeks.

I would be happy to add the knowledge that I found, bits by bits on some pages where I feel something is missing.

But so far, I have never really seen the possibility beyond adding a comment to a page. From what I have read lately, there seemed to be two sides of the doc, 1) the doc itself, 2) the wiki. But I have never figured out this before and this may even be wrong.

All this to say that if you make a wiki, it should be easy to modify and everything should be in the same place. In short, make things simple and straight forward to modify (no need for an account!)

Great initiative by the way!

I still think that the github wiki still the best option, after all is where the source lives

GitHub is also pretty reliable. They can't afford to lose anyone code. Web pages can also be created on github and everything is git based for easy maintenance.

The README on github could also be extended.

FYI, I managed to build Ape on my mac (mountain lion). If anyone need and howto, I created a new page on the GitHub wiki for now.

Peter, any news on your progress? You could share what you have done so far, maybe we can help revise everything or complete missing parts.

Yes, that's a great idea!
I'm really interested in APE project but also bothering about using it as it seems to no be evolving anymore.
In fact, i compiled source from grithub, tested it and all works fine but without people continuing project it's a huge risk to use it in production. I will agree to participate to construct an alternative APE site centralizing all sources, documentation and discussion forum. My weak point is that i don't have any skill in C/C++ and so not able to participate to APE project development.

Best regards,

Christophe

Hi Christophe

I share all your concerns, but would like to see this go forward with docmuntation and updated releases.

My weak points are that I have not even tried to download APE yet, and my familiarity with Linux is mediocre. But my strength is that I am very strong in C++ itself with about 20 years under my belt.

I should add, that I am actually familiar with *nix environments, networking, sockets, IP etc, having worked primary on Solaris for over 30 years, as well as Windows (20 years), but I'm not that familiar with the idiosyncracies of various linux flavours or linux environments.

So building and fixing C/C++ is not an issue for me, but I could use some Ubuntu support from someone in this group.

Hi guys,

I heard some good news from Anthony Catel (who wrote APE in the first place). He'll probably come here soon to let you know. APE is not dead at all!

Nicolas.

I share some of the concerns mentioned on this thread. As it is, the project is very helpful and usable. The fact that the original developers aren't actively mantaining it doesn't mean is broken or that is does not work. I do understand that problems and bugs might arise but as a community we could sort it out. An open source software should never die unless it becomes irrelevant or obsolete, and the APE project is very relevant to todays web.

Plus the documentation is not really broken the wiki is. Although we should definitely convert the API to Markdown and save it in the github wiki. From what I see the only thing missing is a Getting started guide on setting up the APE server.

I myself took the bull by the horns a while back when I found a repo on github of an early draft of the next generation framework for the project. Since then, with the help and ideas of interested members of the group, I've been building an alternative framework and we have made some very good progress in the project. As it is now is probably not what the original developer envisioned, as the API differs in many ways to the APE_JS API but I think is a simpler solution. If someone would like to read more on the initiave here is the repo link https://github.com/ptejada/ApePubSub
