Dear colleagues,

My AP results are lower than what I expected this year. Not a single 5 out of 13 students, when I usually gets a majority of 5's, a lot of 4's and one or two 3's.

Could you share your experience?

I got an expected 3 but the rest got 5

Strong students I piloted the whole school year without homework just class work

What is your average ? around 3 to 3.5 is still great you know this exam is not easy

My results were somewhere in between yours, Cat and Laurence. It was my first year teaching AP French with the current exam, and I was new to the school so not at all sure of my methods or what to expect. I took your advice, Cat, and used a lot of material from the APprenons text, which I found very helpful. I also used a bit of Allons au-delà (though I found this text not too well suited to an AP course) and several readings from Thèmes.

Out of 6 students I ended up with one 5, three 4s, one 3 and one 2. All in all I was pretty happy with that. Some of the students were not terribly hard workers, so I think the results were partly luck--especially when it came to the cultural comparison topic. I had shown a few memorable TV commercials that students compared to US commercials (in content and style) and I think that helped a lot. Who knows if I'll be as lucky next year!

Laurence, I am curious to hear how you were able to get such great results without giving homework. Can you say a little more about the class activities you mentioned? And how did your results this year compare to previous years?

I had 6 students taking the AP exam in a combined French IV-AP class. One 4, four 3 and one 2. The 2 was not a surprise. The student level coming into AP was low and remained lower than the expectations. I would have expected at least another 4. I feel that the topics were hard/ did not correspond to what we had discussed in class this year.

Everybody got a 4 but two got a 3. Usually everybody get 5's and some 4's and one or two 2. I knew during the year that most of my students' results were not steady...but not a single 5. I'm surprised.

Laurence, was your class this year especially strong that you did not give homework at all? if you do that on a regular basis, I'd love to be in contact with you as I really would like to lower the amont of HW. I actually tried this year, and thought that my lower results were a direct consequence of it. Although I still give much more than I'd like.
