Does anyone know when the exam and audio files will be released? I would really like to hear the audio for the essay myself. Our proctor thought it would be posted to the College Board website within 2 days because that is what he was told for the Spanish test, but he wasn't positive.

Hi! My kids didn't say anything about the audio for the persuasive
essay, but they did say there was one line of the simulated dialogue
that they didn't understand and that the cd skipped a bit in the
computer lab. Ugh.

My biggest surprise hearing the feedback was how little there was that
was" francophone" outside of Europe. I thought this new exam was
supposed to incorporate the whole francophone world.

On verra!

I haven't heard the radio broadcast but My students have all told me
that it was almost impossible to understand because there seemed to be
a bad telephone connection. Some just went with the first 2 prompts,
while a few thought that, given that the interview was with the person
who had written the 1st prompt, this one would sort of agree with that
one.

Merci. I listened to the French audio prompts as well as Spanish. I can tell you that the Spanish ones were much much slower and extremely clear. The audio for the French was just the opposite. Our students are definitely at a disadvantage when there is so much of a difference in the level of difficulty.

ps - also please CLIP your messages so all the appended (non-related) content doesn't clog up the messages.

Dear Dagmar and all,

Thanks for sharing the links for the audio files.  Here is the link for the corresponding Spanish audio files if anyone else wants to compare them.  I found it profoundly depressing to hear how much easier the Spanish audio is.

I also found it interesting that the Spanish exam instructs students : "Now press record to start the recorder" in clear American English, while our French students and proctors had to listen for "Maintenant appuyez sur record."

I thought one of the justifications for creating this new Language and Culture exam was to create more consistency among the different language exams.  Were others under this impression as well?

Best,

Wow. Huge difference. I could understand the Spanish, even though I do not speak Spanish, only Italian.
Thank you for providing the links. It is a real eye opener.

I just listened to the two audios. Big difference in quality.  Maybe the people who write the Spanish exam can evaluate and collaborate with the people who write the French one; that way there will be some consistency in the two. Judging from the sound quality,  the Spanish exam was written by people who want to ensure success not impede it.

I was just trying to listen...did they remove it....I only heard the
directions and if you click on the link, it is 17 minutes long...much
longer than the time they promised?

You have to click on Spanish audio, it's mislabeled. But yes, the
whole file is 17 minutes, you have to skip past the instructions and
blank space because there's like a minute to read the intro, then 6
minutes to read the text, then a minute to read the audio intro, then
the audio.

Dearest AP French teachers,

Please keep in mind, that the current Spanish AP language exam is not
yet equal, not in parity, with the new French and German exams.

The Spanish teachers will start the new Spanish exam curriculum for
2012-2013 with a new syllabus starting this next school year.

We will have real justification to complain in 2013, if we find a
significant difference in quality of audio between the two languages,
at that time. And, has any one attempted to listen to the German
audio prompts?

I do agree with you, my students reported that a radio talk show with
a participant who calls in, increased the level of difficulty, due to
the audio distortion incurred from the phone call to the radio
station.

The persons responsible for the final selection of exam items are at
fault. I am sure the test item committee selected the best audio
samples.

Cordialement,

All of us who have concerns about the audio prompts should go to the
AP French Community on the College board website and listen to the
audio prompts, especially source 3 and we should all express our
concern there! There is strength in numbers. The audio prompt is
nearly impossible for a non-native student to understand and the use
of such poor quality audiobyte on an official exam is despicable. If
we don't complain, nothing will be done. I just checked out the AP
Community there and a handfull of teachers have written comments.

Hi, Monica

I guess my question is this: which is the email address that we should send our complaints to? My students insist I lodge a formal complaint. I'd like them to read it first and offer input. But I want to be sure it's going to the right person? Can anyone help?

I actually went and listened to the German material.
1) the audio source for the PERSUASIVE ESSAY is not posted.  The instructions are there, and the guidance that student has 6 min to read the 2 written sources, but not the audio prompt?  Oversight maybe?

2) the instructions to PRESS RECORD for the speaking tasks was also ONLY IN GERMAN here (so maybe next year in Spanish it will also only be in Spanish).  Although it doesn't make sense, since the proctors are often NON-speakers of the language and wouldn't know when to start the recording on a centralized recording language lab.  ** this needs to be fixed for all exams!**

I wish the essay audio for German were posted... I would love to be able to compare the quality.
I found links to the original podcast from which it was taken, but in each case, the actual sound file was gone.
When I read the text though it sounded quite challenging since there was a TON of 'argot' / slang used.  That can be tough, I imagine, for High School Students.  The topic had to do with people choosing to live at home while studying vs. living alone/in a dorm/w/roommates.
