A Benefit for Jerry Sloan
sponsored by
Marghe Covino, Patrick Gaffney and Robert Saavedra For over thirty years, Jerry Sloan has been a leading GLBT activist in Sacramento, facing down homophobes like the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, and co-founding the Sacramento GLBT Community Center. His challenge to Falwell is an especially inspiring story -- read about it here. Jerry has also been active in the local "unchurched", freethinker and humanist community. A charter member of Atheists and Other Freethinkers, he served as its president for 2011. In 1991 he co-founded Project Tocsin to be a successful watchdog of the theocratic Religious Right. Now Jerry Sloan has fallen on difficult times. For the last eleven years, he has done home health-care work to supplement his Social Security. At the end of August his heath care client was hospitalized. Jerry lost 60% of his income. Now age 74, because of his own health problems, he can no longer do such work. As a result he faces losing his mobile home, car and just about everything he owns. On February 2, 2012, friends will host a Groundhog Day benefit for Jerry at Faces from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. (2000 K Street, ph. 916-448-7798). The benefit will include performances by Gayle Von with Jim "Fingers" Jordan at the piano and stage magician Richard Kowaleski. Attend to help a friend in need.
