AOF received a survey participation request from Joseph Langston, a UCCS (Colorado Springs) researcher, for members of the local community of reason.  If you would like to help, see the link below.  It takes only a few minutes, and is actually kind of fun, a chance to express yourself.  Participate if interested, feel free to disseminate.

I am a Masters-level student researcher at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS).  My degree will be in sociology, and my area of emphasis is religion.  Currently I am working on my Master s thesis, and this is the reason for my contacting you now.  I don t wish to waste your time, so let me get right to the point.  For my study, I have compiled of a contact list of Buddhist temples, Christian churches, Islamic mosques, Hindu centers and temples, and various atheist organizations, all across the United States.  What I am hoping is that these groups will be willing to distribute a 19-question survey to their members via the Internet.   The survey, which I built myself using Google Documents,  asks questions about an individual s social, demographic, and family background, to include their orientation towards religion, and it also asks questions about a psychological construct known as  locus of control .

For your edification, I have included a link to this survey so that you may see it for yourself.  This will help you determine whether or not this is something you d like to send to your members.  You will also notice that the instructions at the start of the survey include notices about privacy and confidentiality of responses.  Furthermore, this survey is only intended to be taken by those 18 years old and up.

My work will follow up on the research recommendations made by another researcher, Dr. Laura Hunter. If you would like to see Dr. Hunter s research paper where she outlines the research recommendations that I am following up on, I would be more than happy to send you a PDF copy of her paper.

If you do not maintain a listserv or an email newsletter for your members and so cannot distribute the link to the survey, or simply do not wish to distribute the survey for any reason, then I certainly understand and I appreciate you taking the time to read.  Thank you!

Very sincerely,
Joseph A. Langston
