Hi all

I'm writing a paper for CAA Budapest that will survey the use of Semantic Web/RDF in archaeology. I know that there are quite a few applications in the museum and archive sector, but there seem to be a lot fewer that make use of excavation data. If anyone knows of a good example(s) (preferably with some reference material or a contact) I'd be very interested to know about them.

All the best and thanks in advance

Leif

Yeah, well, we were going to develop some but then our RDF expert
buggered off to academia (to join, as far as I can tell, all the other
RDF experts...).

Git.

We’re trying to cidoc our database; I had been thinking of presenting a paper on implementation; maybe we could collaborate somehow?

Has anyone else had trouble updating Linux Suse to 10.3? for some reason it keeps asking me for a “repository” that I can’t find; I’ve burned 4 or 5 ISO installation cds & dvds, thinking there might have been some error there, but haven’t been able to get anywhere; anyone else have trouble or able to tell me what I’m doing wrong?

Very possibly - the CRM will most certainly get a look-in. My stuff is principally going to be an overview of usage to-date though, with a bit of discussion at the end as to how SW might go about dealing with tabular and geospatial excavation data.

Give me a shout offline when you have some time :-)

I cannot come to Budapest, as I will be in Boston at that time.

However, there are some guys, who presented an implementation of the
CIDOC CRM in OWL at the CIDOC CRM SIG (i.e. special interest group)
meeting in Nürnberg last December. (Geoff please look them up in the
program). They could be interested in participating in your session, or
so...

Best wishes and all the best for 2008 for everyone in the list...

Yeah, Stephan Stead should be there, Martin Doerr, too, I think; but aren't they the guys running the session?

Not heard anything, but then I only have SuSE on boxes I haven't
switched to (k)Ubuntu yet... Is the repo a URL or a local device?

I don't know however how this relates to Detlev Balzer's

This is probably interesting for some of you...

Yesterday I got a notice from Atlassian, i.e. the producer of JIRA Issue
Tracking and the Confluence Enterprise Wiki. They are extending their
non-profit/open-source licensing program to all their products, which
permits free use of the applications in non-profit and/or open-source
projects.
I have made some very good experience with JIRA, which in my opinion
seems to be one of the most convenient Issue Tracking and Project
Management tools on the market
The same seems to be true for Confluence in comparison to other wiki
software, as far as you are not used to mediawiki.
Their homepage is http://www.atlassian.com/

Regards, max.

It just asks me where it's located; I tried to locate it on my external
drive (which linux doesn't recognize anyway...), & on the iso cd/dvds...
But my neighbor tells me I should switch linux flavours anyway, that suse
went downhill after leaving novell...
I only ever use it to run GRASS (& had a horrid experience trying to copy
something in vista today: what a surreal experience!)

Switch to KUbuntu - we will be making sure that archaeology needs are
being addressed in the Ubuntu package set through our customer status,
via the open archaeology Launchpad site and through community
influence. The more the merrier!

BTW, don't know *any* external drive that is not recognised by
(correctly configured) Linux installations. What kind of drive is it?

Well, it might have something to do with trying to recognize it during the
installation process, so I'm not going to sweat it; otherwise it's a western
digital with some sort of stylized "e" on the outside; I forget what exact
brand name it carries

Dear Leif and others

In case you have not come across it there was a paper given by Paul Cripps and myself at CAA2004 in Prato about our work at English Heritage on ontological modelling of archaeological processes using the CIDOC-CRM to semantically model the inter-relationships between existing and future data structures.

I'm not sure whether the Prato proceedings have been published yet, certainly I could not find them yet on the CAA website. But Paul and I along with other colleagues did also publish some of the modelling on the CIDOC-CRM website at:

http://cidoc.ics.forth.gr/docs/Ontological_Modelling_Project_Report_Sep2004.pdf

and

http://cidoc.ics.forth.gr/docs/AppendixA_DiagramV9.pdf

Since Prato I have continued some work on the ontological modelling including the archaeological extensions to the CIDOC-CRM with the long-term aim of providing semantic interoperability. I’m currently part of a small team working on a project with AHRC funding called STAR (Semantic Technologies for Archaeological Resources see:

http://hypermedia.research.glam.ac.uk/kos/star/ ) and I’ve coincidentally just submitted an abstract for a paper at CAA2008 in Budapest to present updated results, including the RDF versions of our CIDOC-CRM archaeological extensions. So with luck, if you are giving a paper on the semantic web, we should end up in the same session at CAA2008.

If you want more info on this get back to me.

Best wishes

Keith May

Hi Keith,

thanks - it looks really interesting. I'll follow up on this with you offline :-)
