InterFace 2010: Humanities and Technologies
2nd International Symposium for Humanities and Technology
July 15th-16th 2010, International Digital Laboratory, University of
Warwick, UK.

InterFace is a new type of annual non-profit event. Based on the
format of last year's successful forum at the University of
Southampton, this year follows in the same footsteps: part conference,
part forum, part networking opportunity. The conference aims to bring
PhD students, early postdocs and other early researchers together from
the fields of Technologies and the Humanities in order to foster
cutting-edge collaboration. Delegates can also expect to receive
illuminating talks from experts, presentations on successful
interdisciplinary projects and on how to succeed as academics.

Hi all

for those who couldn't make it last year, it was an extremely enjoyable and stimulating event (disclaimer: I was one of the organizers :-)). It's particularly aimed at increasing interaction between folks from different research communities so there'll be plenty of new faces (and ideas) as well as the usual crowd.

I'll definitely be going so hope to see some antiquistas there too :-)

Ah excellent, was wondering about this the other day as I missed it
last year (due to a schedule clash). Will try to make this year's,
especially as that is about 10 mins from home for me.

This seems interesting, but after checking the call for papers it also
struck me as extremely broad ... Before I jump into this, can anyone
tell me what kind of issues were addressed last year, and what kind of
spin-off this generated?

Yeah - that's quite good place to get a feel for it. The emphasis is indeed quite broad - this is because the intention is to attract (and bring together) folks from different communities and cross-fertilise ideas rather than e.g. present results. For this reason, many of the activities are quite fast-paced and interactive in order to stimulate more extensive discussion out-of-session. This gives it quite a different feel (and to some degree a different purpose)  to conferences a la CAA.

I don't know whether there are specific projects or partnerships which can trace their roots back to InterFace '09 but the comments we received at the end (both verbally and on feedback forms) were overwhelmingly positive.

Hi Philip,

Just to further comment what Leif is saying. Yes, there's no guarantee
you will find someone to collaborate with on your particular field,
but there are many advantages to this than other conferences. You get
a broader view of all kinds of research out there, you might also find
interest in what other people are working on, which may lead to
further collaboration, or not. We balance this by also having
presentations by experts who talk about their experiences and provide
advice for new researchers who wish to do multi-disciplinary projects.
Topics such as getting funds and resources, post-mortems on past
projects, and approaches to involve industry and academia are among
those covered. This ensures everyone benefits from attending the
conference in one way or another.
