Flat endcaps???

I think we're talking about actual pressure vessels, correct?

Would you like to:

A) tell me the formulae for deflection and stresses in flat round endcaps for pressure vessels and hemispherical endcaps for pressure vessels (Timoshenko, "Theory of Plates and Shells" will do nicely), and

B) tell me how many of each of the following categories you have seen as endcaps on pressure vessels:

1) hemispherical
2) elliptical or pseudo-elliptical (flattened)
3) spherical section of r=D of cylinder (concave or convex)
4) flat plate

The answers should be "some" "lots" "some" "almost none" respectively, because a flat plate is structurally the least efficient possible simple shape to use where pressure loads dominate.

This is a structural exercise not a purely geometric one.  Flat plates are the wrong answer.
