HAPPY TURKEY DAY, EVERYONE!
All eyes are focused on Thursday’s family and feasting, but look
further into the future to Saturday when AGA gets to strut our stuff
in the Chuy’s Children Giving to Children Parade down Congress
Avenue. The greys have been part of the parade for years, and the
organizers are always tickled to have us participate again.
Here’s the scoop: AGA has a large red/green float with 9 white
greyhounds pulling a red sleigh on the top. The float is #10 in the
line-up, so you must be at the float location NO LATER THAN 9:30 am.
The parade begins lining up at 10:30 and steps off at 10:45. The
float is always in the same general area of San Jacinto Blvd. and 12th
Street. Bob’s cell phone number is 917-7668 should you need help with
directions.
Parking is available in the State parking garages on 14th Street &
Trinity and 15th Street & Trinity. (Trinity is a one-way street
heading north. From Mopac: Take 5th Street east to Trinity and turn
left. From IH35 exit 12th Street to Trinity and turn right, or you
may park along the street if you can find a place. The whole parade
staging area will be blocked off by police, so you will NOT be able to
drive your vehicle much closer to our float than these garages.
ABSOLUTELY NO THROWING OR HANDING OUT CANDY, PROMOTIONAL ITEMS, ETC.
FROM THE PARADE ROUTE TO THE SPECTATORS.
The route will be south down San Jacinto, west/right on 11th Street,
south/left on Congress Avenue, ending at Cesar Chavez. De-staging
will be on the Congress Avenue bridge. There will be a shuttle to
take folks back to the beginning should you want to ride back. The
shuttle WILL allow the greys on board.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO WALK IT. There is seating on both sides of the
float for those humans or hounds who don’t wish to walk the 12-block
parade route. Those who choose to walk the route with their greys
MUST stay between the nose of the truck and the back of the float.
This is a parade rule, so tarrying to let folks pet the hounds must be
quick!
It will probably be chilly as we stand around waiting for the start,
so you and your hound might want to have a coat – which you will shed
quickly enough as it warms up and as you begin walking. Don’t forget
your poop bags and a little water for your hounds. If you have a
white AGA shirt, wear it. If not – dress for the holidays….that
includes hounds! Santa hats and jingle bells are welcome!
THIS IS THE EVENT ALL AGA MEMBERS, PAST AND PRESENT, LOOK FORWARD TO
EVERY YEAR. COME JOIN US. IF YOU HAVE FOLKS IN TOWN, BRING THEM
ALONG – THEY CAN RIDE OR WALK. KIDS LOVE IT, TOO. Maps and
instructions are being placed on the AGA website at
www.austingreyhounds.org
should you need further info. See you Saturday!
