THE REIGN OF THE GREYHOUND
(excerpts from the book by Cynthia A. Branigan)
The oldest known portrayals of dogs in art are 12,000-15,000 year-old
hunting scenes on the walls of caves in France. Among drawings
located in southwest Turkey is one of hunters with bows and arrows
pursuing a stag. The funerary vase found in the ancient city of Susa
has been positively dated to 4200 B.C. More recently but still
thousands of years ago, the Berbers, a nomadic tribe that lived and
traveled around northern Africa, began to actively cultivate distinct
kinds of dogs. The tribe became known throughout the region for
its ... swift hunting dogs. These African hunters are the ancestors
of today's greyhound. The Berbers supplied the dogs to the eager
Egyptians, who took to the breed with great enthusiasm. (to be
continued)
AVAILABLE DOGS ARE RUNNING LOW, SO SOON WE'LL BE ABLE TO
