During the decade of the 50's New York seized the focus on innovative art
which Paris had laid claim to for a century.
A small group of "Rebel Painters" established the style of painting known
today as "Abstract Expression."
Among them was Jackson Pollock. He was called the storm trooper of the
movement.
His work "Lavender Mist" is shown in the side bar behind his photo.
Watching him work you wondered if he was a painter or a choreographer. He
literally danced his paintings. His canvas was laid on the floor of his
studio. Bucket after bucket of paint colors were sloshed, slung and
spattered on the huge canvas. He moved across and up and turned and bent
and stood straight. He said "at some point the painting took on a life of
it's own," so he never worried about the small details.
His importance to the world of art lies in shaking loose the forms of the
past. He lived fast and died young and made a lasting impact on art. Few
remember him today, but he is worth remembering for he is one of the giants
